Having intermittent problems with starting the '87 Mariner 60hp 3cyl . Totally cleaned the carbs and know the fuel system is good. Found bad spark on middle cylinder, swapped switch box wires and found a bad coil. After replacing the coil now I have spark on all three but no starting. According to the service manual that I have, I should have 5400 to 6200 ohms between stator windings(red to blue) going to the switch box. I measure only 700 - 800 ohms. All the trigger specs and stator to ground measurements match the manual. My question is does this stator spec sound correct for this motor SN OB158494 and if so do I need to replace the stator? The manual I am using says its good for models before 1986 and my motor is 1987. So I am not sure about the spec. I suspect that the spark that I have is just to weak. I guess it sparks OK out of the motor but not when installed due to compression? Also if it turns out I need a stator, how difficult is it to get at? I know I need to pull the flywheel but what special tools do I need? Or should I take it to a mechanic that has the right tools.Thanks
The spec I have here at home show..398-5704 OHMS with the meter set a K1.Make sure the engine is turning at full cranking speed. Shoot some fuel into the sparkplug holes and replace the plugs and see if she fires. Also if that does not do it. Un-hook the rectifier and see if she starts.
Thanks Trent,Are you sure 398 - 5704 it seems like a pretty wide range. Are you saying that the stator is OK with my reading of 700 - 800?I'll give the other suggestions a trying but I know after I crank it and pull the plugs they are wet. So my guess it they are getting good fuel. I just clean the carbs and was out on the lake yesterday, (it started yesterday) and it ran pretty good, until it quit altogether and would not start.What does unhooking the rectifier do? If that works does it mean a bad rectifier?Thanks
Hey Trent,Tried both suggestion. Disconnected Rect. And squired all cylinders then reinstalled the plugs Still won't fire. Read some other threads that talked about the spark test.Even though I have spark on all the plugs. I set a 1/2 inch gap instead of the plug and it won't spark. I need to reduce the gap down to less than 1/8 inch before it jumps. Does this sound like a stator problem? Not enough voltage?Thanks
dodger, lees than an 1/8 inch gap means no spark....if you cannot jump a 7/16" gap at cranking, it is not enough to perform normally...everything you are telling me says you have a low speed winding in the stator that has failed..time for a new one. if you want garantees, call a dealer and have them troubleshoot and repair...DIY, your gonna need a flywheel puller [special] torque wrench, an a manual....
Thanks ODDD1,I appreciate your help. I have read alot of your threads and knew you would be the guy that could help me. You have great knowledge and helpful answers so thanks in advance.Here's the deal, I have a 60hp Mariner and it only appears to have one stator winding going to the switch box (blue and red wires)so doesn't look like it has high and low speed like some motors. There's another winding with two yellow that go to the rect. I am glad to here you confirm that it looks like a stator however I was just looking for one final check on the resistance reading. Like I had said I don't know if the service manual is correct? Do you have a resistance value for my motor? Are Trents numbers correct? Or should I just forget it and replace the stator.One more thing. Appearantly I do not need a puller for this motor. I was just poking around trying to figure out how to get to the stator and found if I remove the screws on top of the wheel that it comes off and the stator is removeable with 4 allen head screws without pulling the main part of the flywheel off the crank. It looks like the trigger coils would not come off without pulling it though.Thanks a bunch.
