I am trying to rebuild a 1966 Johnson 9.5 (model MQ-12A) after checking compression. Top cyl had no psi & bottom had 80. Pulled powerhead apart and rings were froze up. All looks OK except for a little scoring on top piston which I think will be OK. Also the crankshaft has some pitting and marks on the surface that the lower bearings travel & a little chatter marks on the lower cyl jounal. I understand the crankshaft can be resurfaced. If I take this to someone to do for me, will I be able to find some oversize bearing for this older outboard? If this is not the right way to go, how can I over come the problem with the crankshaft without having to spending alot of money? This outboard is new to me. I have a repair manual. Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome to Iboats, sshore!

I think a good used crank would make more sense than repairing the one you have. Sometimes they show up on ebay, but you could order them from a used outboard parts dealer like tcoutboards.com neecaprecision.com does crankshaft repair if you want to get an idea of how much it costs.

If you can clean off the marks with crocus cloth, they're not serious enough to warrant replacement.

You might want to try reassembling the engine (without sealers and such except some on the head gasket) to see if you've got decent compression now. Otherwise you may want to start looking for a complete good used block.

RE: crankshaft. Just as Paul said, a little crocus cloth should clean up the chatter and remove any highs on the pitted bearing surface.

Oversized bearing are not available.

Some pitting is OK. A needle bearing does not need 100% contact across the crank surface, so don't over do the crocus cloth.

When I took my 9.9 block off to overhaul it, and I bough new rods, pistons, rings, bearings, seals and gaskets, I found that the boring costs alone would be around $100.00. I was able to locate a complete engine block/power head for $125.00 shiiped to my door so guess what? The old block and new parts are sitting in a box, the replacement power head is installed on the engine and on the boat!
