85 johnson 40 hp barely turns over with new starter

Hi all,<br />Was running a Johnson 40 hp near top end when it<br />sputtered to a stop. Then it would barely turn over so I put a new starter in. No help. Do you think I'm dealing with a serious bearing problem<br />or similar? Took out the plugs and it seems to turn over smoothly, and cylinders look ok.

Make sure you have a good, fully charged battery. Clean battery posts and cable butts. Clean cable connections on motor on starter solenoid. Try cranking again. If that works then do a compression test.
