I have 5402b Evinrude 5.5 motor. On fast setting I get high RPM's in reverse and neutral but in forward I only get half the Rpm's.

Re: Lack of power in forward gear

Welcome to the forum!

Shouldnt be reveing the little guy in neutral or reverse. The reason it will rev in reverse is bacuase your prop is very ineffecient in backwards rotation. Dosent take much power to turn it.

To get the little fellar to rev in forward takes more power. You need to check your timeing first of all. And then check and see if you have strong enough spark to jump a 7/16 gap.

If all that checks out good then the other place to look is at fuel deleivery. Carb has to be absolutely clean. take apart and clean with carb cleaner and compressed air. put in new carb kit.

You get all this set up just rite, Ill bet ya a soda pop the little guy will take ya anyplace ya wana go.

More power to ya!

I forgot to also say. That you should do a compression check. Not much need in doing the other things if you dont have good compression.

Iam gona make a guess and say it should be 70 pounds and hopefuly more. You will have to check your manual to see what the factory recomends.

More power to ya!

I took the flywheel off and found a burned hole in the coil suspect lack of spark as cause. Thanks for your help Cap!
