Stripped Ehaust Manifold Plug-Merc 260

I stripped the threads on the frost plug on the lower side of the exhaust outlet. But that is not the worst part. This plug is a drop port (for drainage) that the plug threads into, the manifold is cast that way. So when chasing the threads the cast broke some at the edge of the opening and is no longer a perfectly round hole. My thinking was to rubber plug it since this is just a fresh (hot) water outlet. Will that work or do you have other ideas?

A picture would help.

If you stripped it out, you might be able to carefully drill the hole out. and go to the next size plug. Use a pipe tap.

You might want to remove the manifold to do this.....

A rubber plug might work....but I wouldn't trust it. It might come out at the wrong time and you won't know it until you cook the rubber exhaust parts on that side and/or over heat the engine.

Thanks- I agree pulling the manifold is the ideal way to fix it but given a number of circumstances that will not happen, and I can not get at the underside of this to do much of anything in place.

Any alternatives? and how much heat will we be getting there- it is exit size so I was assuming the water never exceeded engine temp and if I blew the plug the only consequence is water in the bilge correct?

No

with the easy way out through the plug you will NOT get the correct water flow to cool the exaust gas which will melt the rubber parts

Ayuh,.......

And that'll Sink your boat..........

I'd probably try some Epoxy Putty of some sort,...
Keep a Close Eye on it,.... It might get you thru the summer,.....
Then pull the Manifold,+ Toss it in the Fall......
