Have battery compartment open and can smell some fumes.I check line and hatch with flash light but can not see anything wrong or damp.Can the tanks be venting off some?

I'm looking at a 1994 ranger 392v with 200 hp. xri merc. Was this a good boat? Is it wooden or composite? Will it hold up with good care? Is this engine a good one? Looks to have been well taken care of. Thanks
How often does the plastic gear on crank need replacing ? How many hrs. can it normally last? Is their an up date or any options? Is this something a person can do (with some mechanical exsperiance)? The motor is a 1995 Thanks GT
