    gasket recommendations

Anyone have a preference as to the gasket brand when rebuilding. Seems they sell a marine version which is substantionally more expensive than a typical gasket kit. Anyone know if there is a difference or did they just add on the boat tax.

Engine cylinder out of round question

So im trying to decide what I should do to my 1994 genV 454. I have everything pulled apart and have been taking some measurements. All crank journals measure within spec and should be good to go with a light polish. Cam seems good to go as well. My question is what to do with the block...

    454 head question

So it appears that my heads are in need of a rework. They are Gen 5 casting 10114156. I found a guy local who has what he claims are to be low mileage takeoff heads of the same casting number from warranty return vehicles. Supposedly the heads only need to be cleaned and can be used. If...

    valve end play / reamer 454 1994

So I checked the valves on my 454 and am showing somewhere between .003 - .004 play. It appears this is out of spec for this model so I will need to do some headwork. Anyone know where to get a reamer .015 oversized so I can ream and install new oversize valves? Anyone ever tackled this before...

    Foam removal

Any good suggestions for foam removal. Ripping up the floor to get at a stringer and the foam is killing me. I knew this stuff would take time but darn its the little stupid things that seem to get me behind. If its not the carpet glue holding me back its the foam AUGHHHH

To Mercathode or not to Mercathode

Im getting ready to pull my motor and cant decide what I want to do with the mercathode. This is a fresh water boat that is not left in the water except for maybe 3-4 days a year. Is the mercathode even worth having. At this point it seems like more trouble than its worth to rewire and...

who has used advantech for boat floor etc

Considering the use of Advantech for the floor on my boat and am curious if anyone else has used it before. I was told by someone on this site in another thread that I should probably use Epoxy if I did go with it due to its construction. Just curious if anyone had used it before and if they...

    1994 Chaparral 230 rebuild thread

It was suggested in another thread that I start a dedicated thread to the rebuild of my boat. This way everyone could keep track of the progress and decisions made. So here we have it. This is the beginning of my long journey into pain and agony. LOL The reason for this rebuild was that the...

    glue removal

So I am in the process of removing all the flooring etc in my boat. This is all pretty straight forward and going as expected. My main concern at this point is removing the carpet glue from the sides. I had figured that a really course (40 grit) flapper disc would remove it easily but as I...

    Floor replacement cutting question

Im almost to the point where I can cut the floor out of my boat. I have read a couple ways to do this. One where you cut as close as you can to the hull then grind it flush. The other where you leave a few inches out which allows a little flat area to glass too. Is there a recommended way>...
