1971 Twin 6 Mark Twain engines finally out!

Back in the fall I started this project and posted a few threads. After a long winter, I finally got around to pulling the engines to get to the stringers and transom. I'll update when I see what the damage is. Nothing like an old tractor to do the trick!! MK

    Twins ready to go!

I just got the 1971 twin 165 6cyl Merc outdirves ready to go for my Mark Twain. New seals and impellers. I got a donor boat with rebuilt 165 engine and outdrive, it's a shame, the 1966 Fiberform 18ft was a cool boat, but the floor is trashed. Just celebrating some progress with you all. Thanks

Gear ratio determined in upper or lower or both?

I never thought about it until now, but I was offered a lower unit for my 1971 165hp, and am wondering if they are all the same inside with the ratio being determined by the upper gears? Thanks

Early Mercruiser top cap bearing/race question

Hello, does the race in the top cap "float" in the cap, on both my 1971 outdrives, the race is not press fit into the cap, and slides out easily. It seems to me it would have a tendency to spin in the cap, which could not be good. There is pressure on it from the spring loaded pre load rod, but...

    Early fuel pump question........

Did any of the early fuel pumps (165 hp l6) not have the safety fuel port on them. I bought a couple used pumps to rebuild that just have the weep hole, other than that, they are identical to marine pumps, upside down with the filter etc. Would it be acceptable to tig weld the weep holes, then...

    Crankcase ventilation question..........

I am switching back from electric fuel pumps to mechanical, and am wondering if the fail line from the mechanical pump should go on the carb where they currently have the crankcase tube going?? I am assuming the crankcase should go to the flame arrestor on the carb instead? My flame arrestors...

Out with the new and in with the old!

I got my HEI distributors and electric fuel pumps and all the junk that went with them off today. I count 4 fuel filters for each engine including the brass one in the carb, a little overkill I think. Also, from the way it was plumbed the oil pressure safety would not have worked because the...

    leave in antifreeze OK?

I winterized (drained) my twin engines (merc 165's) but I am switching back from automotive HEI ign to points, and back to mechanical fuel pumps, I'd like to be able to run the engines during this process, but don't want to get caught in a freeze. Are there any problems with putting a bucket...

Did early Mercruiser distributors not have thwe screens on the bottom??

I just got my two points type distributors for my twin 165's that have HEI's on now, one has the familiar screens on the bottom, one does not, other than that they are identical, did the early ones have no screens?? Thanks

    Mercontrol question.............

Hello all, is it possible to adjust the levers on this set up to position the beginning neutral point? In other words, I'd like the levers to be closer to the dash to start, I really don't need WOT for reverse, they are in an uncomfortable position for forward operation. Thanks

MErcruiser "top cap" or top cover assy question

My top cap with the cracked hook eyelet is part number 55758, and I bought a 76098 that was supposed to be a replacement, but the bearing race diameter is larger on the 76098. What to do? One is 1.782 and the other 1.937 Thanks

Considering a vintage boat, would like opinions please.

Hello, this is my first post, I accidentally poster it on the engine forum, sorry about that! Anyway I am looking at a 1971 Mark Twain V24 with twin 165hp mercruiser straight 6cul motors and R outdrives. It's in pretty good shape, the stringers and floor seem good, the transom is dry, but the...

Considering a vintage Mark Twain boat, seeking opinions!

Hello, this is my first post here, looks like a great place for boaters etc. I am looking at a 1971 Mark Twain V24 with twin 165hp mercruiser straight 6cul motors and R outdrives. It's in pretty good shape, the stringers and floor seem good, the transom is dry, but the outside transom at the...
