My 85 Johnson GT 150 is still surging. After it hits 4000 rpms, after a few seconds its like it starves for fuel and the rpms will drop, then it catches back up and surges forward, then drops again. Up to 4k it starts, idles and runs flawlessy. I replaced the VRO with the 83 model fuel pumps in...
Got an old mercury.... Vin is 4733535 which corresponds to a 77 1500 inline 6.... It's not an inline 6 it's a V6... The starter is stamped 9/16/84.... How the heck do I know the year to start rebuilding?

Here's the rundown... after first trip out this summer I decided to dump some money in this ole boat and try to fix it. I ordered service manual, got all gauges back working, rewired all the switches to working order, replaced the stator, glued a couple magnets back under flywheel, replaced...
Curious about the wires that push on the coils.... Does it matter which coils they go on? I know the short one goes to the middle coil, but the other two are only about an inch difference in length. Does the longest oh to top or bottom? Or does it matter? I would think they fire in a sequence...
Now that the motor and gauges are all right, I'm gonna fix all the switches. I have a master, nav lights, acc, bilge, and aerator. I think I feed the power and ground to all other switches from the master, is that right? Just branch it out?
New stator, new rectifier/regulator, new Faria tach, and new sending wire from terminal strip to signal post on tach. Dial is set on 6 and still no reading on tach. Y could this be?? Johnson GT 150 1985.
So new rectifier/regulator, new stator, new tach, new sending wire... Tach still doesn't work? Suggestions to why?
Also, since I put the new rectifier/regulator and stator on, the overheat alarm goes off when starting the boat and won't let it run... After I keep tryin for a few minutes, it...
What does the trim tab do? How do you know where to set it? Curious because a log on our nasty lake broke mine off... I need to know how to set it when the new one gets here. I would assume it keeps the boat running straight? It also split the left side of the above the trim tab bout an inch...
So I put a new gauges to replace old ones since tach wouldn't work. I put new stator and regulator/rectifier in and also glued two of the magnets back in place under flywheel. I was hoping this would fix the tach and the problem of boat wanting to bog down under WOT. When motor gets warm, after...
Mr. Reeves, I order a manual like you said, however it won't be here until next week. My brother in law, a pretty good mechanic will be here Friday with his tools... He is going to do some work and Your how-to's is what I need. Here is what he will be doing:
- Installing new stator and...
There is a red arrow shaped plastic thing with a thread on black plastic end... When I turn it, it changes how fast the boat idles. Is this an idle screw or something else? Should I not mess with it? Also noticed when I turn it, it will occasionally let a drop of fuel come out? Thanks in advance
How do I troubleshoot the tach not working on a 85 Johnson 150GT? Here is where I'm at... Read the voltage on battery at 12.5 then let boat run and it went to 13.5... Pulled hot terminal off battery while running for a few seconds to see if boat died n it didn't... Assume rectifier/regulator is...
I put the boat on the trailer, all good. A week later I go to put it in the water and the motor won't even raise up.... I can hear the motor running but the cylinders on the motor aren't moving. Low hydraulic fluid? Can I use ATF and where do you put it in? Other possible problems? Any help...
