Mercruiser 5.0L EFI - TBI Low compression all 8 cylinders

Trying to hunt down a low acceleration problem, I decided to check the compression in the block. It is a 2001 EFI with TBI 5.0L. All cylinders are between 60 and 75 psi. Maybe a bad compression gauge ? What else would cause ALL cylinders to be low like this ? Maybe something with the timing...

Need GURU's to diagnose a Mercury Distributor Ignition Sensor "CHERRY"

So I'm trying to diagnose a "slow acceleration" problem I'm having with my 5.0L EFI (TBI) Merc. I pulled out the Mercury Distributor Ignition Sensor from under the CAP and attempted to test resistance between RED/WHITE and GREEN/WHITE wire connectors. OHM meter showing OPEN LINE. I know the...

Just wondering if there are specific tests that can be done to check the function of a fuel pressure regulator on a 5.0L TBI motor. Could not find anything in the shop manual (#24).

Engine instantly dies when Coolant Temp Sensor is plugged IN

I have a '99 Merc 5.0L with the TBI EFI. There are 2 sensors in the thermostat housing. One on strbrd side is one stud, tan wire. The other one is on the port side of the housing and has a black and a yellow wire (2 wire plug). If I keep this 2-wire sensor unplugged, boat runs good, but...

Need help identifying ignition system... PICS INCLUDED

I went to check to see what kind of ignition system I have to double check the timing on my engine. Upon digging deep on the Net, I "think" I have the MEFI 3 system. (pics below). Now, this part is confusing. I thought the MEFI system is only on fuel injected engines, but mine is a 2 bbl...

Drive bellows clamp cut by drive ???

Noticed water in bilge a few days ago. Inspected the drive, found a clamp that looked like it was cut. The inner drive bellows clamp. Seems like the drive cut it while pivoting left/right or raising up/down , but how is this possible ? IS IT possible ??

High idle at 1900 RPM. Otherwise good

Re: High idle at 1900 RPM. Otherwise good I was wondering if anyone can help me out with this IAC valve. When you unplug it while motor is idling, do your RPM change ? Because when I unplug mine, nothing happens to idle speed. Just to make sure, here's the pic of it. It's on the LEFT with 4...

1985 alpha 1 gen 1 won't kick into gear, engine shuts off.

Re: 1985 alpha 1 gen 1 won't kick into gear, engine shuts off. Lift up your outdrive as high as you can, and look into it. The shoe and rod should be inside of each other. (It's the one with the oil drop in the pic ;) )

High idle at 1900 RPM. Otherwise good

Replaced all my bellows this winter. Pulled engine to replace oil pan gasket and rear main seal. When I started her back up again, the idle RPM was around 1900. It was nice and smooth idling, no shaking, sputtering, racing, etc. Just stayed at 1900. Went to check the throttle cable. Seemed...

No crank, where does this wire go....?

Re: No crank, where does this wire go....? Here's the pic of the wire that's loose. Seems to be a ground according to my tester... comes from the same loom as all the slave solenoid wires. Can't find a bolt small enough where this would connect. And btw, already replaced the O'Reilly...

Is this the end ??? Water in a few cylinders, possible rain water got in ???

Hey guys, just replaced my rear main seal and oil pan gasket on the 5.0L. Started her up outside on the ground. Fired right up, no leaks, was happy. Put the motor back in boat, let the boat sit a couple days outside..... and then it poured rain outside and I was at work...

    Quick OIL PAN gasket question

I've looked thru the manual but can't seem to find the diagrams of the thin metal pieces that run between the block and the oil pan gasket. They lay right on top of the gasket and get sandwiched in-between the actual block and oil pan gasket. Anyone know what they're for ? Should they be...

The aggravation continues...same oil leak at flywheel

Re: The aggravation continues...same oil leak at flywheel Well, I guess I was in a bit of a hurry to install the rear main seal last time, that I think I forgot to replace the crank oil seal HOUSING gasket. (#6 in the pic I attached). If I was a betting man, I'd guess this is the first place...

The aggravation continues...same oil leak at flywheel

Took the 2003 5.0L Merc out this winter to fix an oil drip at the back of motor (flywheel area). Replaced the oil pan gasket and rear main seal, making sure all corners and joints of the oil pan were properly sealed with RTV silicone. Put everything together, popped the block into the boat...

No crank, where does this wire go....?

Long story, short. Pulled motor over winter to replace rear main seal, oil pan gasket, intake manifold gaskets, re-installed everything. 305 GM block. Now starter won't even crank. Very faint clicking with a random hard click. Battery good. I DID find a loose, small, black wire that comes...

    Have a Speedometer hose question

Well, while doing routine maintenance to the bellows, etc with the bell housing off, I decided to check what was wrong with the speedometer as the needle doesn't move while I'm under way. I tried blowing into the hose as hard as I could, but could only make it go up to about 20 MPH on the dial...

    Pulled motor, now what ?

Re: Pulled motor, now what ? Sorry, forgot to mention. This is a new-to-me 2001 Merc 5.0 (GM 305 block) with a carb. The engine oil leak was in the back, dripping on the flywheel housing that's why I pulled the motor. Seemed like it was either coming from the rear main seal or the oil pan...

    Pulled motor, now what ?

Pulled the motor due to rear side oil leak. Replacing the oil pan gasket and rear main seal for sure. What else should be replaced while the motor is out? I suppose auto parts are okay for these parts ? Thinking bellows also.
