    Reversing Outboard output shaft rotation

Just a left field question. I have a RIB with two 40hp 40XWL on, both rotating in the same direction. I was wanting to have them contra rotate. Was watching a video this a.m. on the two gears in the lower unit and thought, surely one simply has to change the front spur gear with the rear spur...

    What does a Chartplotter do?

Hi all, I have been looking at the Garmin GPS 276 type unit as an on and off water solution. To the best of my knowledge we do not have any of our internal waters charted and this is where I spend my time. Assuming there are no preloaded charts does the chartplotter have any usefulness? If so...

I'm BAAAAAACK ....... can finally see the site again

Hi all, After about two years of being unable to access this site I am finally able to access again, albeit extremely slowly and with page timeouts. Nevermind that, at least I can see posts and post in return. Would appear as if Firefox has also helped tha matter. Well all I can say is that...

    Cavitation

Hi, My 130hp Yammie does 5600 rpm with a 19" prop so it appears to be correctly propped. When turning tight there is some cavitation. The cavitation plate, when the motor is trimmed, is level with the lowest point of the hull, which is a monohull. Any thoughts? Cheers Andrew

    130hp Yammie Questions

Hi, on the weekend I experienced a sudden loss of rev's, from about 5600 to 4800. I commented to my brother that it was almost as if I has lost a cylinder. When we got home a closer inspection revealed a small black box about 1.5 X . 1.0" that was connected to the plug and was earthed to the...

Don't you just hate inconsiderate people

Hi, my rant The river I boat on has a tributary flowing into it. One can navigate this tributary for about 22km?s before it gets too narrow, it is great to idle along and to spot all the bird life. I have been up this river on numerous occasions. On the weekend I took my brother up as he too...

    Countering prop torque

Hi My question relates to the fin that is used to counteract the effect of prop torque on the steering. Is the fin able to make the steering nuetral or will one allways feel the effect of prop torque, albeit reduced, irrespective of how far the fin is set? Cheers Andrew

    Axle suspension?

Hi anyone use rubber suspension axles in favour of standard axles with leaf springs? The rubber suspension is in the cross member of the axle. Although they are more expensive than the standard axle I can get one from a friend who had one on his caravan. He bent the one swingarm and insurance...

    Trailer Mod's

Hi, On my trailer, the keel section at the bow (where the winch is) rests against a very shallow "V" roller. This to me provides little or no lateral support. Support asides the winch exerts no downwards force as it is also positioned too high so it's need repositioning. If I am to go cut and...

    Wot

Hi, if a manufacturer states that the rpm range is 5000 - 6000rpm what then is the WOT. Is it 6000rpm or should one be conservative and keep it down to say 5500rpm to save the motor? Why the range? Why not state a fixed rpm with a tolerance? Thanks Andrew

    Stainless prop's wrecking lower units

Hi, Life is filled with so much misinformation and I don't believe the following one. If you use a stainless prop and you hit a submerged item you will wreck your lower unit. I always thought that there was a shear device in the hub of the prop? The theory being that the alloy prop will break...

    Boat speed

Hi, I am planning on buying another boat. It is a foward console 17.5' deep V hull made by Wahoo. It has 2 x 40hp Mariners on the back. The owner claims a top speed with two adults on board as 48km's per hour or 30 mph. Sound kinda slow, or is that normal? Cheers Andrew

    Old Fuel

Hi, I use my boat rarely, a full tank of fuel could stay in the boat for 6 months. It may be my imagination but I do believe that the motor does not run as well with this old fuel. A fresh tank seems to be better. I premix and the fuel is kept in the regulation plastic gas tanks. Is this my...

What was good news .. now sad news

Hi all, I remember reporting wonderful and great fightbacks as my brother Erich faught to keep cancerous Malignent Melanoma at bay. This morning sadly at 02:15 Erich lost his fight and slipped away. The last 6 weeks was very tough for him as the tumour grew to about 15" x 8" by 3" high, the...

    Mono hull vs. Cat hull

Hi all, It is time to change boats. My requirements have changed from family boating to more fishing type boating. My shallow V bowrider, although fitted with removable boards that replace the seats fore and aft, to serve as fishing platforms, is no longer suitable in choppy weather. I also...

2 stroke vs 4 stroke outboards

Hi, I have done a search on the forum but can't seem to get the answers. Could someone help me with the relative advantages / disadvantages of each. I was speaking to the boat salesman and he tells me that there is a big lag on pulloff? I would have thought that the 4 strokes have better fuel...

    Fuel consumption

Hi I have a 115 evinrude on the back of a 17" bowrider. I was planning to change boats to a more fishing style boat with two smaller engines. Perhaps 2 x 45hp. I was curious as to the fuel consumption of the smaller engines. My 115 is a real gas guzzler. Any experience of the smaller engines...
