    Bingo! I had an older Honda in the shop with the very same symtoms. Turned out the exhaust manifold had a hole burned through...Too bad the part was NLA and was not financially feasible to remove the powerhead.

    Mercarb 2BBL vacuum hose?

    Normally connected to the fuel pump with a see-through hose (NOT the fuel line). This hose allows the skipper to view the condition of the fuel pump diaphram. If you see fuel in the hose, you have a ruptured diaphram.

    4th picture in (IMG 6852)...see the flush-mounted, slotted screw? That's the fill screw.

    If tilt goes up and down, your pump appears to be working. Try operating pump up and down a few times to bleed any possible air in the cylinder(s).

    See those hydraulic lines on the left? Follow them back to the pump.

    The motor drives the pump, the pump pushes the hydraulic fluid to the cylinder(s)...the fill screw is on the pump.

    In a river/lake...exhaust back pressure will affect idle (unlike on a hose). Besides, you operate it in the body of water...can't go too far on a hose :)

    Honda book says 1200 rpms (+/- 100) in neutral after warm up.

    Working on a 1974 Evinrude 40 HP model# 40E74S, remote, electric start. A friend brought it in off the boat. I have it on a stand and my question is: Will it hurt to rope start it and run without any electrics hooked up from the remote and no battery? I realize that I'll likely have to choke...
