V4 backfire at idle after timer base replaced

1995 Johnson 140 HP. I changed the timer-base and power-pack with new CDI parts. (Motor was surging at highspeed) I found orange and orange black wires on stator cracked and shorted together when I remove the stator. Anyway. I repaired that too. I timed WOT as per Joe Reeves method. I set...

    VRO replaced with mechanical pump

1995 Johnson 130 looper. I replaced my VRO with a mechanical pump. A mechanic recommended the pump and I took his advise. Is a single pump going to deliver enough volume for this motor?

    Bubbles in fuel filter

1995 130 Johnson. Runs good until WOT. I see a flood of bubbles in my inline filter when I open up the throttle. So much air that the filter is only half full. The filter is between the primer bulb and fuel pump. Motor will start surging. I slow down and bubbles disappear and runs pretty good...

    Flywheel Keyway, Is This right?

I'm replacing a sheared flywheel key on a 1995 Johnson 130HP. It uses the half moon type key. It doesn't seem to fix right. The key-way seems shallow. Is this right? Please see attached photos.

1995 Johnson 130 HP No Spark

Had an intermittent misfire. Replaced power pack, rebuilt carbs, and replaced timer base with a used one. I did find a loose flywheel with a bad key. Possibly causing the problems. Anyway, It Started up for a few minutes but now I have no spark at all. All cylenders lost spark at the same time...

    Is my gas tank leaking?

I have an 80 gallon tank under the deck of my boat. I was getting trash in the carbs so I started siphoning the fuel out. I got a lot of water. I'm not sure where the water is getting in. Is there a way to test a poly tank for leaks without removing it? I can not remove the tank without...

How To Install a Moeller Water Separating Fuel Filter System

I purchased a boat with an uninstalled Moeller water separation filter. The previous owner didn't have the instructions. It has an input and output on the left and the right for a total of four connections. The two on the left have plugs in them the ones on the right have hose barbs on them...

Hard to start after carb rebuild

1977 9.9 HP M10R77A Before the carb rebuild, the motor would crank easily and I never used the choke. It had lack of wot power and would not idle well, so I rebuilt the carb. After the carb rebuild it idles great and sounds more powerful but it is difficult to crank. At first I have to crank...

    1977 9.9 running on 1 cylinder

1977 Johnson 9.9 10R77A Compression-Just checked it. 1=100 2=100 Spark looks good on both plug wires and feels pretty strong running through my arm. (don't ask) :) It seems to lack power. I can't quite get a 12' joh boat with 2 people on plane. I removed the plugs and they look ok, so I...

    4 HP Johnson uneven compression

I'm looking at a 1976 Johnson 4HP 4R76M. It has pull start only. I didn't warm the motor up and didn't put it full throttle because I didn't know I should. The top cylinder has 60 psi The bottom one has 90 psi It will crank up and run in a bucket. It took about 6 pulls to get it started. The...

    Used Outboard Pre-Purchase Checklist

I recently got took on an outboard motor deal. The motor started right up and ran fine in a bucket of water but on the lake it had no power. Turned out that it had no compression on one cylinder. What steps should I take to check out a used outboard before purchasing it? Thanks!

How much is my outboard worth?

:redface:I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but here goes. I have a 1975 Mercury 500 50HP. Low compression on cylinder 4. I'm not a good enough mechanic to fix it. So, I want to sell it for parts or whatever someone might want it for. Other than the low compression it looks...

    Powerhead match

I have a 1975 Mercury 500 50hp and found a used powerhead at a reasonable price. He says the compression is 105 in all four. Does that sound a little low? My serial number is 3821XXX and the other power head is a 1979 with serial number 4965134. From what I see in parts list his powerhead is...

    Mercury 500 slows down

1975 Mercury 500 50HP. I took it out for a test run today. It was slow to get on plane but gradually got up to speed. It took about 10 seconds. I ran out about a mile before it began to slow down. It gradually got slower and slower. The motor sounded ok but just wouldn't go. I tried...

Nothing but a drip from the fuel pump

1975 Mercury 500 50 HP. I have removed both fuel lines. When I pump the bulb I get fuel on the inlet side of the fuel pump but not on the out. When I try to crank the motor all I get is a drip on the out side. I've opened up the fuel pump, nothing looks really clogged.

    Dirty Fuel Line

I just finished up rebuilding my carbs. The strainers in them were extremely packed with green gunk, I removed the fuel line that goes into the fuel pump and placed it in a bucket then compressed the bulb on the line several times. I'm getting more green stuff coming out of the fuel line. I...

    Red Epoxy On Carb Screws

I am rebuilding carbs on a 1975 Mercury 500 50hp Serial # starts with 38????? There are two screws with red epoxy on the heads. From what I can figure one is the main nozzle and the other is the idle tube. Should I remove these screws? I read someplace that I shouldn't but I would like to...
