I picked up an '82 E35ELCND and would like to know if it has a battery charger under the flywheel? If so how do i connect it to my battery for charging? If not can i add one to this motor? This is my first boat and motor so i am a bit uneducated on all of this

Yes electric start models should have a rectifier fitted for battery charging(bolted to the side of the engine). It is #6 in THIS DIAGRAM the wires (A red and three yellows or a yellow, yellow/gray and yellow/blue) should go to the terminal strip #4 (also bolted to the engine). The yellow wires connect with three yellows from the stator, the RED wire is the DC +ve for connection to the battery. The DC -ve connection should be made to a ground connection as the rectifier case is the negative.

You should find a P clip in the lower half of the engine cover for securing the cable and somewhere a grommet to lead the cable out.

Before connecting up you might like to test the rectifier. See Small rectifier test in the engine FAQs but use the diode test range if using a digital meter as the resistance ranges do not always work for diode testing.

When connecting the battery be absolutely sure you never get the polarity wrong or you will blow the rectifier instantly. Also do not disconnect the battery while the engine is running as that may also damage the rectifier.

The output is not regulated so you will find that the volts varies with engine speed and may reach quite a high value at high revs once the battery is charged

keep in mind, it is designed to keep the starting battery charged, not to charge a trolling motor battery. these do not put out much charging until they are atleast 3/4 throttle, and will that a long time to charge a battery.

I noticed that they make a 4-5 amp model and a 6-10 amp model. Could i put the 6-10 amp model on my motor and get more power :rolleyes:to maintain my battery? My motor does not have power tilt and trim

you would still have to do a lot of long runs at near wot.

I understand that but my thought was. Why buy a smaller unit for the same price if they would both work without any other mods? The 6-10 amp unit may keep me from having to charge my battery when the boat is in storage

those don't require much battery to start them and the charging system is meant to just top them off. If you are running a trolling motor off the same battery it will more than likely not keep it charged up. Unless like said you run a LOT at 3/4 to full throttle.

Not to be rude, but that doesn't make sense. Even at 4 amps that's more than enough to maintain your battery. It doesn't matter if you have 4A or 10A going into a fully charged battery it won't last any longer when disconnected and put in storage. At 10 amps you'd have to run at WOT for 8 hours to fully charge a normal battery.

Anyway, I'm not sure, but I think the stator for your motor is 5A. I believe the 6-10A is for larger hp motors.

Cars use all sorts of electicity to run the motor, heater fans ect but the alternator in them is rated at 35, 50 some even a hundred amps. 10 amps aint going to charge a dead battery in a short run. All day running maybe, but still unlikely.
