1972 Mercury 402 lower unit off but stuck in forward

I replaced the impeller and when I got it back together I couldn't get it to shift to neutral. Admittedly, I kinda forced it a little. Anyway, I've taken the lower unit back off and have read every posting I can find about this. Here's where I'm at. With the lower unit off when I turn the drive...

Ok, thanks for the barrel advise. That makes sense. I can definitely flush from the thermostat. It is at the top and back of the head.

    1972 Mercury 402 - r/r water pump impeller shredded

The impeller is obliterated. I'm curious what ideas people have about possible problems with the pieces and ways to possibly flush them from the engine?

That was the first thing I did before I bought the boat and rewired the engine. 150 psi in each cylinder.

    1972 Mercury 402 - r/r water pump impeller shredded

Getting this thing running still... I got it started but only ran for a second because no water came out the tell-tale. I went to replace the impeller and found the old one shredded. Just the center left, all the fins gone. What should I be concerned with? Where did the pieces go? Obviously up...

1972 Mercury 402 40hp. Stator needs replaced. Should I Upgrade?

The wires in the stator are shot. It is only a 2 wire stator. The motor has electric and manual start. Should I replace the stator with another 2 wire or upgrade to the 4 wire and add a rectifier? I had to buy a wiring harness already and it came with extra for the charging. Would that be a good...

So it looks like the interconnect cable hooks to part 14. But this one in the picture doesn't show it the same as mine with the arm sticking out the other way that the interconnect cable attached to. However in the starter cord housing parts diagram the interconnect cable is in the parts...

    1972 mercury 402 40hp two questions

Ok, I'm not great at this, but I think you talking about the fuel line to the carburetor. It has paint in it making it look cracked. It's actually is in good shape (maybe the only thing). I removed the line from the adapter to the fuel pump as it was leaking. Its being remade for me.
