Only starts out of water - Inline 6 1150

I bought this project boat a few years ago— the engine was seized due to being underwater and full of mud. I sort of rebuilt the engine and got it running again. It’s always been hard to start though. This year, I’ll get the boat running easily out of water with muffs on, but when I take it to...

    Blown CDI or a dud?

I went to start the boat this season (1974-76 Mercury 1150) and there was no spark. Bench tested the switch box, no spark. Bought a new CDI. Now, there is only intermittent spark. I bench tested the new part, and it only occasionally throws a spark, and only with a very short spark gap (1/8"...

    Rectifier question

Last season, my Mercury 1150 (1974-1976) was running fine. I spent the winter restoring the deck-- this year it won't start. No spark. My instinct tells me I accidentally pulled a wire when working throughout the winter. Checking for continuity, I can't chase the brown wire on the rectifier...

    Water pouring out of exhaust

I rebuilt a Mercury 1150 (1976-1978.) I got it running, but noticed water pours out the exhaust. I assumed that I ripped the powerhead to lower unit gasket, so I replaced it. Water still pours out the exhaust. It's possible I ripped the second one too, because I forgot that I have to get the...

    Throttle cable question

Mercury 1150 (1978); I'm trying to set up the throttle and distributor. It doesn't seem like the throttle will revolve the distributor fully. Either, I can set up the throttle cable to open the carb valves, but it won't pull the distributor back to where the spring (on the distributor) takes...

    Mercury L6 won't start

My Mercury 1150 won't start. I ran a spark test. I'm getting spark, but some cylinders don't show a consistent spark. I'm considering taking apart the distributor and cleaning the contact points, thinking that altough I'm getting spark, it's not strong enough to ignite. Any suggestions before I...

    Lower unit

I took the powerhead off my Mercury 1150 (1976-1978.) When I took it off it was in nuetral. Later I noticed that the shifter pulled out. I wasn't sure at what orientation it had been in. The Seloc manual I have says do all the diagnosis of lower unit with the powerhead attached and I don't know...

    Gasket sealant

I'm rebuilding a 1150 Mercury -- the repair manual recommends Loctite blue for the crankcase assembly (where the gasket consists of only a rubber strip.) I've used Loctite for screws but didn't know it could act as a sealer. My question is, should I get gasket sealer and put it on the gaskets...

    Reeds

What closes the reeds on a Mercury 1150 (1976-1978?) Is it just the air pressure? Because they seem pretty stiff and I don't see any mechanical feature which would close them.
