70s model lowe bass boat restoration

My neighbor has a 70s model Lowe bass boat. He is the second owner. He rebuilt it a few years ago but it has been sitting since then, most of the time uncovered in the weather. He has mentioned about me buying it to rebuilt. I have not seen it yet. I have already rebuilt an 18 foot Starcraft...

    1973 mercury 115 compression test

I want to run a compression test on my 1973 Mercury 115. I have read several posts. Most say ground plugs to block. Can you just unplug coil to distributor wire instead? Also, posts say throttle at WOT. This would need to be done at engine because of neutral switch? Thanks for any help. If...

1974 merc shift problems after impeller change

I just changed the impeller. I placed the shift/throttle lever into forward prior to pulling lower unit. When I put everything back together, I had to force the lever back into neutral. A slight bump on the lever shifted it back into forward. I was able to start the engine. I decided to adjust...

Removing lower unit 1974 Merc 115

I am trying to remove the lower unit to change the impeller. I can loosen the front and 2 side nuts, but cannot figure how to get to the rear bolt. There is a fin under the trim tab that looks like it comes off, but I cannot figure how to remove it. I tried twisting but didn't want to put too...

1974 Merc 115 water pump issue

I started my 1974 Merc 115 last week for the first time this year. I had muffs for water. I did not get any water out of the exhaust holes in the back of the cowl. I did have a good strong stream from the pee hole. I put a barrel under the motor and I get some water spray from the exhaust holes...

Needle valve and seat 1974 Merc 115

Can I change the needle valve and seat on the lower carb without removing carb from engine? According to one diagram I saw, removing the top of the bowl accesses the needle valve and float. Is this correct. Thanks.

    trimming motor without hydraulic trim

I have an 1979 18 ft Starcraft Supersport that I have rebuilt from scratch. It has a 115 Merc without power trim. How do you know what hole to place the pin in to properly trim? Right now the motor is trimmed up and held by a transom saver for towing. The boat would cavitate when I tried...

    1974 mercury 115 shifting/throttle cables

I had disconnected the shifting/throttle cables when I had my motor pulled. After hooking them back up, the shifting cable moves but doesn't seem to put into gear. I heard a grinding noise, so I quit. The throttle cable doesn't move at all. I have tried to moved it by hand and everything seems...

    1974 115 switch box question

I had my motor running well. I took it to a shop to pull the motor so I could replace transom. Then had them remount the motor. It would not start. No spark to plugs. I did a little testing but had to lay everything aside for several months. This week I started working on it and began testing. I...

1979 Starcraft Super Sport 18 ft

I posted a thread last summer. I had just purchased an 18' Super Sport. I posted as a 1987 because that is what the Mich registration said. When I posted a pic, someone thought it was a late 70s. It turned out to be a 1979. I will post a few pics from start to presently where I am at. I still...

    1987 Starcraft 18' restoration advice

I just purchased an 18' Starcraft aluminum boat. The previous owner removed all the flooring. All of the parts are just laying in the bottom of the boat. I'm not sure of the model. The Serial # starts with STRE. I am attaching a picture. Any advice about flooring, etc. would be appreciated. I...
