    I know this is a weird specific request, but can anybody measure the width of the key on their outboard? The engine in questin is a 1963 40hp model# 40353d. its only about a 1/32 of an inch difference so using calipers would be ideal The key is slightly wider than the notch on the new impeller...

    can't remove lower unit!

    Re: can't remove lower unit! Finally had a chance to work on the motor this morning and thanks to everybody's input I got the lower unit off! The wooden wedges did the trick. The splines look great on the drive shaft probably just had some corrosion in there because I do use it in salt water...

    1963 evinrude 40 hp, model#40353d. I've removed the 7 bolts that hold the lower unit on, and removed the lower screw on the shift linkage coupler (dropped into the housing, not sure what to do about that). I've rotated the flywheel as I pull on the lower unit incase there is a drive shaft pin...

    overheating 63 evinrude 40 hp

    my outboard seems to be overheating. When I start the outboard water will come out of the telltale after about a minute of warm up, but it is very hot. To hot to keep my hand under the water for more than a second. The paint around the cyclinders is peeling. bad. :facepalm: I took the tstat...
