My 1986 28 SPL starts up on cold start with one bump. After running for a few minutes i kill the motor. Within 5 min of killing the motor it starts right up no problem. Now if try to start it after 5 min it wont fire. It takes 5 to 6 bumps of the key for it start. After Each of the 5 bumps...
On my 1986 28 SPL, when motor is cold it fires up with out even chocking. when I kill he motor after running and i start it back up within 1 minute it fires right up. If i wait 5 min it starts real slow and i need to bump the key about 3 times.
any ideas?

I let my motor idle for 6 to 7 min. and the head never even warmed up. Can this cause the motor to run rich and foul plugs. I put my fingers on the head and it was ice cold.
Thermostat must be stuck open.

Any body changed their prop on an 1986 Jhonson 28 SPL? If so please let me know what your results were. I am not sure which one to go with for a few more mph. I currently have the stock prop on it now.

I just changed the Lower unit oil on my 86 Johnson 28 special. I am getting a small amount of oil leaking
out of what looks like a weep hole. It is positioned at the same height as the top refilling screw. Is this a
overflow ? I don't think I overfilled it. It has since stopped leaking but...

i just got a 86 Johnson 28 SPL. I ran it today for the first time and it ran fine for a few minutes perfect and then at full throttle it surged/bogged and then died.
I checked for spark and it had none. what can i test to check for the problem?
