Hey everyone,
I've read several threads on the subject but don't seem to have a definitive answer.
14 foot deep V aluminum Smoker Craft Vega, 1973. 20 HP Merc 4 stroke.
At plane it lists heavily to port. Sits level at rest. I have it trimmed up.
My question is, which way to angle the trim tab...
Hey Guys,
I did my first maintenance on my new 20 HP 4 stroke. Changed the engine oil and gear lube.
The gear lube in it from the factory was clear and really thin.
Is that something different they use for break-in of new motors?? As we all know, normal gear lube is much thicker.
Just...
Re: New motor sits too high
Here's another angle. The boat has a pretty good keel on it.
The transom also has a pretty steep angle on it which is why the lower end is so far from the transom.
I think I'm going to have to alter the transom to lower the motor.
Do you think a hydrofoil will...
Hey Folks,
I just repowered my 14 ft aluminum fishing boat with a Merc 20 HP 4-stroke. This boat has had the transom rebuilt. Smoker Craft recommended a short shaft motor so that's what I bought. However, now I wonder if the transom was built higher because this is how my motor sits.
This is...
I have a '91 40 HP "Classic", Oil injected 4 cylinder. The top cylinder is binding. I thought it might be a broken ring but turns out the piston, rings, and cylinder are perfect. Turning it with a wrench on the flywheel nut I can hear grinding/catching on the crankshaft. I can only assume the...
Hello all,
I'm looking over a '91 Merc 40 HP oil injected Classic for a friend. I got the motor delivered to me with all of the cables/wiring unhooked. I believe I have most of it figured out by just matching wire colors. I have the throttle/shift linkage working. I'm left with the battery...
Dumb question guys...
Is it harmful to run a motor without a lower unit? I have a Johnny 35 HP that was gifted to me. I started it and ran it for a few seconds with a hose up to the water tube.
Is there a possibility to damage the motor by running it without the lower unit? I want to run it...
Hey Gents,
I have a '79 Johnson 35 HP that was gifted to me. Besides the normal grease zerks it has lube fittings in various places like the throttle linkage. I know you've seen them. They are just nipples with holes in them.
How do you grease these fittings? Is there a special grease gun...
Hey all,
I have a '79 Johnson 35 HP that a buddy gave me. It's missing the lower unit. Can anyone tell me what year/HP range Johnson/Evinrude lower unit will fit this? It's a short shaft.
Thanks,
HD
Is there a way to determine roughly what RPM my motor is running at knowing pitch and WOT speed of my boat?
My little jon boat runs just shy of 17 MPH at WOT with a 7 pitch prop.
The motor is a Mercury 75, 7.5 HP year 1973.
Thanks,
HD
Hello Gents,
If you saw my post a couple days ago about my 7.5 having intermittent miss at WOT I think I found the problem.
I performed the timing and syncronization procedure per my Merc shop manual and found that it was slightly out of adjustment. It was advancing too far.
Does that sound like...
Hey Gents,
My buddy has a '97 Yamaha 40 horse jet that's goverened to 35 horse because of Alaska's HP restrictions.
Any idea how it's goverened and how to reverse it?
Thanks,

Hi Gents,
I finally got my 1973 7.5 HP out for its first full test run after it's rehabilitation. She runs great except for an intermittent skip/miss at WOT. It pushes my little jon boat at 16 MPH which is pretty impressive.
Any ideas why it misses at WOT?
Thanks,
HD
This old 1973 7.5 HP is a strange one. It will not start with the choke, period. When I prime it hard fuel will spray out of the throat of the carb. A couple of pulls with the throttle in the start position and she fires right up. If I try to gently prime it and start with the choke closed it...
My 1973 Merc 7.5 HP has quite a bit of play in the throttle. It has about 1/2 inch of play either way before the throttle actuates. The only part I thought could be responsible for the play is the bushing where it connects to the bottom cowl. However, the bushing is good and there is no side to...
