What hp for wellcraft 250 sportsman

I'm looking at possibly buying 1987 25 ft wellcraft sportsman with a mercury blackmax 175. Is this enough hp for this boat or should I look elsewhere? Any opinions of this boat would be appreciated as well. Thanks

Way under powered. 260HP I/O - 225HP Outboard, prefer more

Did I mention I was poor. Whatever engine comes with the boat is what I'll have to stick with. I did see another one with a yamaha 225. Its not in as good condition but it was cheaper. I know wellcrafts are ok as far a build quality but does anyone know how well this particular hull rides?

Depends on what you want to do with the boat.. It might have a hard time getting a big guy out of the water on a slalom ski with several people onboard. But if you are into cruising, tubing and little guys/double skis you will be OK. Not everyone needs to go 50.

I'd think that with the right prop it should be able to run mid 30's
mercury's prop selector says 40 mph but I suspect that is a bit high... It would be no speed queen but would be fine.... interestingly the boat is rated for twin 150's max.... two 175's would be FUN but alas frowned upon

I can't believe that boat would even plane with a single 175 on it.

not enough power-its rated for almost twice as much HP-get something you can enjoy!!!!
