Re: Plasma vs. LCD
Gotta say I respectfully disagree with both of above posters.
Here are some facts on power consumption, instead of an incorrect assumption. Plasmas of the same size usually use a LITTLE more electricity than LCD's...but nowhere near 2.5x more. Maybe 20% more. and there are acually a number of 50" plasmas that use LESS energy than some 50" LCD's. Better to read specs than to make assumptions if this is a concern. And for most new TV's, when they're off, they're OFF....they do not have the parasitic standby drain of the past, especially if you buy one that is Energy Star rated:

And I have personally found that a 46 to 50 inch Plasmas are usually CHEAPER to buy than a 46 to 50 inch LCD, not more expensive. Plasma handles motion better, though the 120 and 240 refresh rate models in LCD's are finally closing the gap. Though plasmas are and always have been closer to the 500 or 600 range...
I'm a plasma fan, hands down. Softer, more natural colors, blacks are substantially better and less 'grey', better motion handling, not such a harsh white light that seems to come from LCD's. Generally in a very bright sunny room a LCD will look better to overcome the glare. But in a darker room with less windows and direct sunlight a plasma will look better.
Panasonic is my favorite plasma brand. 46 to 50 inchers can be had for $800 to $1,400 if you shop around, depending on whether you want the latest and greatest or just a budget model.
Can't speak for repair costs. Have never had a problem...so far zero.
Shop
www.crutchfield.com. They have much more current models than typical big box stores, their service is second to none, and they will meet/match prices if you chat with them on the phone...their final sale price is ALWAYS lower than the price they have listed on their website. After you settle on a model you like, call them and chat with a salesperson. I guarantee you their price will drop as you chat...
Here's a filtered list of less expensive TV's that probably fall in your shopping guidelines...notice that the plasmas are actually the cheapest of them all...
