The prop hub could be "spun", the coupler could be "spun", something could be broken in the drive or the lower shift cable could be broken just to name a few things...
Does the engine overheat? If it does, that could indicate a spun engine coupler. Look behind the engine and see if there is any metal shavings around the coupler.

Thanks. I was not aware those big engine couplers could spin. I'm looking to by this second boat for parts, and just trying to determine its value for parts. They "say" the rest of it is good, 87 Bayliner 1750 with full canvas and trailer for $750. I'm getting quoted $350 for exhaust manifolds.
