you have some great advice EVERY time.

I am shifting...and the throttle is positioned just as you seen it in the pic.

I am guessing that is wrong?

Like I said...this is my FIRST outboard. I grew up with boats, but someone else always did the work.

I am learning fast though...hahahaaha

I am actually thankful for the problems, so I can learn.

I will adjust the throttle as you specified...and see where the shifting is afterwards.

Some times it shifts easily, other times...it is like it is stuck and has to be forced. Could be the shaft...who knows.

Throttle has to be at "slow" to shift. Also, if not running, you probably will have to give the propeller a twirl so the gears can "fit".

The shift shaft problem won't come and go. If it's frozen it's frozen till you fix it. Must be something else.

See...I was thinking that!

I will wait till I get it going before I mess witht he shifter.

The Throttle adjustment...

What position should I have the throttle in before adjusting?

Slow? Start? Full?

Figured it out...

Did the throttle adjustment...now it makes more sense.

Set the throttle to slow...gear shift works perfectly.

geez, you know your stuff. hahaahha

Supposed to pick u[ the coils and all that Friday, but don't think I can wait. Hoping to plunk this in the water this weekend.

HEY!!!

I got me a running motor!!

The coils did the trick!

Now...Why is it that it won't stay running unless I choke it...the speed dwindles, I hit the choke and it kicks up again...

any ideas?

Could it be the needle valves? I have the two...upper and lower...

Certainly, adjust the needles. Lower at high speed and upper at idle speed.

I had removed the needle valves when I cleaned up the carb...

is there a specific way to re-install them?

I might have them buggered up...

not sure.

Definitely. Search the forum for the blurb from Joe Reeves about initial carb setup. You need to do it if ever removing your needle valves.

And make sure you did not cram any packing material back in when reinstalling them.

your problems kinda rare, the gales and elgins usally will run fine and get you to the end of your destination,then break down. you have to paddle back.. thats all I remember about them in the 60's.
