Hi I am restoring my uncles old 1958 starcraft 12 foot speedster and am looking for pictures of an original. Or anything at all for that matter. Starcraft's records only go back to 1960. I have tried all the old posts and Google and can't find a 12 foot speedster yet. Do I own the only one left?

Thanks I saw those. I was looking for more detail like where or if these 12 footers had original ore locks(mine does) and my boat has no seat backs or holes where there used to be ones. Just two mahogany planks with the Styrofoam holders underneath. Blueprints perhaps?

Re: 1958 12 foot starcraft speedster

I'm just getting started on a 1959 12' Starcraft. As far as I can tell from that 1958 brochure, it's pretty much the same as your '58 Speedster. Mine has aluminum gunwales instead of wood. And the transom braces are different. Mine does not have oar locks. It's missing one of the seat backs, which I plan to replace along with all the rest of the wood. In some of the attached photos, you can see the aluminum brackets riveted inside the gunwales that fasten inside the seat backs. The aluminum piece that wraps the top of the seats tucks into the flange on top of the gunwale on either side. Let me know if you want to see better pictures of anything.

Re: 1958 12 foot starcraft speedster

Thanks for the pics! My boat has been in my family since the late 60's and near as I can tell never had seat backs like yours. But that does not mean they were not there. My Grandfather (Red) liked to tinker a bit. He once bought a surplus WWII military boat and put it in the Menominee river up above Iron Mountain MI. Big boat, small river, BAD! My grandmother made him sell it (or else)!!!

Thanks, again

I've been looking for photos too. Just doing some research because a friend of mine has what I think is a Speedster. Hard to find info. I'll post some pictures here soon.

Not sure if this is going to work, but anyway here's my attempt at the photos. Has some original nice hardware on it, rearview mirror, transom corner pieces with cast in handles, wheel, winshield brackets. Looks like a fun little boat.

EZ, sorry, just posting pictures per Speed Queen request. What would be the proper protocol?

Speed Queen hasn't been back to the site in a while and with only 4 posts I kinda doubt he'll return. I didn't read the original post though so I was looking at it as you posting pics someone else's old thread. I see now that he was asking for pics. Carry on! Cool boat you have there.

Dexta, that's a fine old boat you have there. I would suggest starting a new threat in the resto section. I believe many would be interested in following your project! I would.

Don't know what happened to Speed Queen, maybe gave up on his.

One source of photos is from ads in old magazines of the time of the boat. That can take some digging. Public libraries used to keep the old issues. Every yard sale has a box of old National Geographics!

Re: 1958 12 foot starcraft speedster

Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated!
that is a nice boat. very similar to mine. I have wooden gunnels though. and no windshield. so i think yours is a 1959.
I have put the boat on hold for now because all dollars are going into my 1958 johnson 35 h.p.. that will go on the speedster.
my boat still has the original starcraft ID tag w/ year made. I will try to get picks this weekend as I am heading to the cabin.

thanks for the photos

Speed Queen lives! I'd like to see the pictures if you could get them.

As for starting my own resto thread, I wish I could, it's owned by a friend of mine. Wish I could get him to sell it to me but he's one of those strange birds that is content to dream and have it sit on his lawn unused. Oh well, perhaps someday I can make him budge. In the meantime I have to quit telling him how cool and nice it is as I will only succeed on driving the price up.

Queen, that thing is going to fly with a 35! you better get seatbelts for it.

Re: 1958 12 foot starcraft speedster

Hey Fellas,
Alan here. Brought home a 1967 Starcraft speedster. Plate says 13' but measures way short of that. Two bench seats, covered bow. Wood has been redone on bow and must be replaced. Bow plate has handle on it. Rear transom plates also have handle as the 1959 12' speedster photo. I wish to restore. Need photos and info. Have looked at all the posts relating to this thread. Any assistance would be great. I removed transom, looks like a botch job on that . Holes drilled everywhere. Photos to follow. Also restored a 1950's Dan Kidney 14' Mahogany runabout.

Hey AL, welcome to iboats!

We'd love to check out your rig man, classic beauties for sure!

But when you post up be sure to start your own thread. This one here should work it's way into the archives.

Cheers:)
