1989 DT8 suzuki wont idle

Have trouble with engine idling when trolling. Have to have choke on to stay ideling while trolling. then engine just dies and have to choke to start. took carb apart and cleaned it with spray cleaner through jets runs worse. Also how many turns do you need to turn the air screw to adjust carb?

Did you do a proper carb rebuild? Soak in carb cleaner over night and blow out with compressed air? ... the correct setting is 1 & 1/2 turns outwards from soft stop ....

we did not soak overnight.But have cleaned the jets. not needle and seat. The carb does seem clean.. we have tried setting the air/fuel ration to 1 and1/2 but will not idle at low when reveved up some will run but as soon as we go to low idle it quits. it will run at 3 turns but when in gear will not run at lower idle. it has us stumped.

do a better job of cleaning the carbs

Should run properly at the spec setting if carbs are clean

I agree, you have to do a proper clean because it might look clean but it might not be (I have made this mistake too many times in my younger days) ..... also check your fuel pump diaphram ...
