We have a 1971 Chris Craft XK22 with the 350 Chevy motor and Volvo Penta 270 outdrive. Have noticed a grinding noise coming from behind the motor. It is a constant noise and was wondering if it could be the u joints or the enging bearings. Any thoughts?

Re: Volvo Penta 270 noise

Welcome!

Sounds like a cool boat! Also sounds like classic drive shaft bearing noise caused from water in the bellows. Unfortunately, pulling the engine is required to replace the bearings.

I would begin by removing the upper gear assembly. Here's how.

Once the upper is off, you can inspect the ujoints, and check the play in the drive shaft bearings.

This is a common repair, and despite the labor intensive job, it is not a difficult one, many of us here have done it ourselves with success.
