Volvo 260 ENGINE W/280 OUTDRIVE

What engine is the volvo 260? It is a red block. I think its a chevy 350 but not sure. I need a new carbruetor and not sure what to buy any ideas? Please help

Ayuh,.... A 260 should be a 350 Chevy, 4bbl. carb...
You'll need a Marine rated replacement carb...

Yep, 350.

AQ260's came with a Qjet carb. Thats what its set up for, thats what I'd use.

Congrats on owning a great engine and outdrive combo.

This is the first boat ive owned and not sure about the mechanics involved. Ive heard that it was a good motor and outdrive and thats why i bought it.

I think i need a new carb because it stalls out when i put it in gear, but when i juice it she has no problems.

I got a 14/23 left rotation prop on it , could that be part of the problem? Is it over proped?

Ayuh,... Sounds like it might just need a Tune-up, or possibly a carb Rebuild...

7505scron, like bond-o, i'd start with the basics. I also have the same combo engine and drive but i have two of them. I have been learning a lot about them over the past two years. My boat, i believe, sat for a couple of years before i got it. I have been slowly working on different pieces and each time, the engines run better. I priced the carbs for giggles and they are not cheap. You can't buy them new, at least i did not find any new ones and rebuilt ones were $400-900. I'd start with the ignition system (points, condenser, plugs, wires, cap, rotor) and retime it, also check the inline fuel filter. Then rebuild the carbs if there are still problem.

This is a big engine on a small boat, wow! I had an 18' bowrider with a 4 cylinder 3.0L, 135 horsepower. Boat weighed 2500lbs. It would go 42 MPH with 2 adults.

It really depends on how heavy the boat is and how it is loaded. Also, driving with the proper trim will change the speed greatly as well.

So you have 260 horsepower, i'd think you'd be in the mid to high 50's MPH as a guess. Top RPM on these engines is 4400.

I recently had the timing done and the plugs and all fuel filters replaced. The guy told me the distributer was still ok and didnt need to be changed.

Do you think a new or rebuilt carb would improve the speed of the boat? At 3800rpm it does 38mph with 2 people or 8 it dosent seem to matter on weight

You should be able to have the carb rebuilt for $150+/-. Do you have a fuel/water separator type filter? Good fuel in the tank?

I run the same engine in my lightweight 20' boat with w 21p prop so I think the 23p you're running is okay.

The first thing you need to do is get it so it will idle properly. It could be that your idle is set way too slow. Should be about 650 rpm in gear. So about 700 in neutral.
Then you need to find out what your WOT (wide open throttle) rpm is. then you can adjust the prop from there.
Once you get your WOT rpm, you might want to post over in the prop forum for what to change your prop to.

Could be the carb...Do you have electronic ignition?

Then you should replace the points and condenser.

I would follow what Don S mentioned, get it to idle properly if you can, with the engine warmed to running temp, 160 deg. Rough cold idle could be a bad choke or something completely different. Confirm the choke is opening when warm.
