having an issue with my 40 hp johnson, is my first boat. boat will start up fine just replaced the plugs, gas line and primer ball and fuel filter.. but if i let it run in neutral or in gear for a bit it will turn off after a while like its running out of gas.... if i keep priming the ball it will run until i stop. i have no idea what the problem is. the guy i bought it from said the fuel pump was changed but who knows couldve bullsh*tted me as well. if anyone has had this problem or knows a way to fix this please let me know and you will be my new best freind hahaha jk but really its driving me nuts since guy told me i wont have any issues at all. it started right up for me when i looked at it even drove it for 15 mins but now this.. hope someone can help. could it be the gas tank? i ran the hose directly in the tank without the clip on and it did the same thing so i dunno. any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I have a 40hp also ,and have had similar problems in the past. Now ,if you squeeze the primer bulb and it keeps running, there's a clue right there. Now you know the gas is not being pumped to the engine. What can cause that? A closed vent on your gas tank could do it. Dirty fuel filter, weak fuel pump.Anyway sounds like your problem is in that area.
I just switched from the VRO system to a regular fuel pump, runs great.Easy to do. I'm no expert. New fuel pump cost about $50.

There should be a metal plate on the transom mount area which gives a model number. That is how you determine the date. There's web sites which tell you how to decipher the number, and also many postings (maybe even a faq?) here on that subject. If you find the model number, you could post it here and someone will decipher it for you.

But, if you're actually going to replace the fuel pump with a brand new VRO (now known as OMS) fuel pump, it's not critical that you know the year, but just follow this guide: There are only 4 current P/N's for VRO/OMS Pumps, and there's a long list of supercedes for each. The current P/N's are

5007423 - for 3 wire pumps, converts to 4 wire...except 2 cylinder
5007420 - for 4 wire pumps except the engines listed for 5007421
5007421 - for 4 wire pumps 2 cyl. 40-50 hp and 3 cyl 60 TTL
5007422 - for premix applications

These aren't cheap so I'd recommend you really try to figure out if it's the pump first. Although, I think what's happening is pretty classic for fuel pump. The thing is, the "fuel" side of the pump can be rebuilt, and that is very cheap.

By the way, this article will tell you all about the pump, how it works, etc.

Note the part numbers in this article might not be current. The above reference is.

OK before you do anything else, let's find out exactly what motor you have. model # on port side of transom mount, or one the Freeze plug on the top of the block. this tell us what you have.

if the pump is bad, my recommendation is to go to the premixed fuel pump, that is block mounted, it is a very simple conversion. you remove the vro pump, block the pulse line, and reroute the incoming fuel line to new pump, and reroute the outgoing line from new pump to the fuel line splitter. you use this pump. http://www.iboats.com/Sierra_18_735...z.36857--**********.824329505--view_id.174141

here is the fuel pump mount for above premix pump. remove the plug YELLOW, the red should be threaded, to mount the pump. gasket between block and pump. he hole where you removed the plug is the pulse port for the new pump. just take an appropriate size plug (bolt) for the existing pulse line and hose clamp to seal it. unplug the harness to the VRO pump, and harness to the oil tank.
