Picked up the the next project last Sunday. The hull is in very good shape, but the wood now that is a different story. The transom is real bad and the stern floor, the battery was falling through. The 85 Evinrude runs geat, just needs a prop. The bow area had been modified somewhat and they had built a livewell completley out of wood, (what were they thinking), it had all the plumbing for circulation and everything.
Here are a few pics. to get started.

Thanks Jas, the motor runs real nice, just had a bad leak on the TnT, the PO kind of screwed it up, but not a biggie to fix. I want to get it all stripped down, and cleaned up then it will have to go on the back burner till later in the summer.

Sweet rig but that yellow has got to go.:( Your reall going to town!! Is that a home made engine lifting device? Just wondering if those are standard grade bolts in the fly wheel. I ask because I may make one for my 90 rude. Since I just painted it I don't want to lift it with straps.

Great foundation and this will be another awesome thread to follow so thanks! PO really built a baitwell from wood?? No liner?? I feel smarter every time I hear one of these stories. I like the "matching seats" though. There could be some real 'vogue styling' around those:cool:

Re: 1979 Starcraft 18 SS Here we go again!!

Thanks guys, Michaelp, the lifting device is home made. I just took a scrap piece of 3/8 steel plate, drilled it to fit the pattern of the fly wheel, then drilled and tapped the center to fit a standard lifting eye. It works real nice, and I do use grade 8 bolts to attach it to the flywheel.
EZ the Im' real happy with how the motor runs but it needs a prop real badly, could you let me know what size and pitch your running so I have a starting point, Please.
emoney, yea I could not figure out what they were thinking when they built the live well with out a liner! DUH. The plastic fittings were even threaded in to the wood sides with a little silicone to seal them.

Re: 1979 Starcraft 18 SS Here we go again!!

I have to get some more pics up on the thread but yesterday morning befor work I got the wiring, windshield and counsuls out, as well as the real nice matching seats. When I removed two of the pedistels, I noticed standing water in the pockets in the foam under them. So with all this stuff removed I went to the back of the boat and tried to pick the hull up off the trailer, well I'm not a small or weak guy and I almost blew a @#?$, and never lifted it a fraction of an inch. So I am thinking I have some serious water logged foam. And yes I undid the strap that holds the boat on the trailer, LOL

Hey Glen, did you take the trailer straps off before you tried.....

...oh, ah, yah. Never mind.

Just messing with you buddy:D

Man, if you can' even get that thing to budge she must be soaked through and through. Good news, I think we know what to do with water logged rigs eh;)

Cheers:)

No worries Jas, I am kinda looking forward to taking the floor up, just to see how much weight is under there. As soon as the coffee is ready that is where I am heading.

Re: 1979 Starcraft 18 SS Here we go again!!

Looks vaguely familiar to me:)

Mine does not have the lapstraking on the sides, the 16 footer are all smooth.

Hard to believe it's that heavy, must be a result of the wooden livewell:facepalm:

Plenty of room in that barn still, so feel free to keep looking for more boats:D

Congrats and good luck with the project!

Re: 1979 Starcraft 18 SS Here we go again!!

Thanks Bigcrappy, Yea we will see how well it does with the 85. My brother has the same boat and he just put an Evinrude 120 on it, we are real curious as to how it will perform.

HA it is mighty heavy but I will post up my findings in the next post. The shop is actually getting pretty full, I have the two 18's in the heated side, my 5the wheel and pickup in the other. But I do still have the old double garage, HMMMM

Well after coffee was ready I went out to the shop for two hours before work and got at it. It is amazing how much you can get done when your fresh and enegetic in the morning. After cleaning out all the tools and parts that were removed, I pulled out the ugly yellow vinyl to expose the plywood decking. It was 90% saturated with water. The last piece at the stern was completly rotten, crumble in your hands. The foam at the back was all full of water. I would say between the decking and the faom clse to 200 pounds. Here some photos. I will have to put them in two posts.
