Anyone running Win 8? If so how do you like it? I've got Win 7 right now and its OK but this HP computer has got to go. I'm going back to Dell.

Its fine once you get used to it. I run server 2012 on my laptop - basically Windows 8 server. I resisted installing one of those add-ins that emulate the start menu and after a few weeks I wouldn't have even considered installing one. Nice thing is that Win 8/Server 2012 boot extremely fast.

Re: Windows 8??

I'm asking out of ignorance, I haven't spent a lot of time with it but, how the heck do you set it up so you can have say half a dozen windows (how I work all the time) open and running? I did manage to get two windows open once by accident and never figured out what I did to make it work.

FYI: I run dual monitors too.

Depends. If you are running desktop apps then it operates the same as Win 7. If you are running metro apps then you generally just cycle through them using the windows key. I don't really use any of the metro apps unless it is just a quick check of the weather.

I installed the Classic Shell and got rid of Metro and have no complaints at all, works just like 7 did and have been able to install all of my programs.

I do a Cntl "N" with Win 7 and can open a buch of windows (internet). Maybe that will work with Win 8?

What is Metro?

Metro is the default windows 8 desktop, which was actually designed for a touch type screen, it is a real pain if you don't have a touch screen and even having a touch screen on a 17 inch laptop, it is a pain to always have to reach up and leave the keyboard to do certain things. This is the reason I installed classic shell, it gives you the start button and classic start menu set up, plus there is a lot of other things that can be configured through it.

Re: Windows 8??

I just fired up a new Lenovo laptop with Win 8, and so far haven't seen an advantage to it that I can utilize. It appears to have been created for people who need to get their jollies with a single click on the mouse or touch of the screen. Also, it seems to favor those who want to do "social media" on their computers.

I use mine for productive (read "business") purposes and, so far, have no use for Win 8. Maybe I'm missing the point, but I'm disgusted with it.

Download Classic Shell, install it, and start working again, that is what I did, took all of about 5 minutes and it works just like my win 7 machine did.

Re: Windows 8??

I run windows 7 and it's great compared to my wife's Vista. My son's new laptop has W8 but not a touch screen. He too has to keep moving between the 2 interfaces. W8 is largely designed around the touchscreen interface, which is your smartphones, tablets and phablets as well as some newer touchscreen laptops. I read an article the other day how sales of PC's have plummeted and I think for all us PC users. we are being offered something by Microsoft that they clearly designed for the touchscreen brigade. Some say the days of the PC are numbered.

Win 8 is not very mouse friendly and is designed more for touch screen use. That is basicly where that large learning curve comes from. If you do not have a touch screen stay with Win7. I just downgraded a friends computer to win 7 because he could not get Win 8. He tried from Christmas til April. Seems to me that Bill is trying to get some Apple users or defectors :O). That's my 2 cents. Best OS is you being at the helm of your vessel on the water!

And to think I'm still on XP. Maybe I'll wait to upgrade after Blue comes out. If it's a Service Pack to Win 8, maybe it will resolve 8's issues/problems....... :)

Re: Windows 8??

What is so silly is, with a simple 30 second download of a free app, you can make a win 8 machine look and operate exactly like a win 7 machine, you would be hard pressed to know the difference, once the app is installed, you have a familiar start button, start menu, control panel, desktop, tool bars, etc.

With the installation of the app, there is no changes and I find it to be a whole lot more stable than windows 7 is, I have XP running on machines, 7 on a couple of machines and my win 8 machine, and by far the win 8 has the best stability, I have never had a crash on the win 8 machine.
