The new (2005-6) 50hp Merc/mariner outboards have "Made in Fon Du Lac USA" printed on them Does anyone have proof that they are made there?
Or are the parts stamped out in in another country and sent there for assembly.
Some reference documents would be helpful.

Yes. You have the proof right there. What you are acccusing would be illegal. In the not-too-distant future, they'll be made in China...and say so. I think they're already rolling off the assembly line. But that's a very recent development. They use certain Yamaha engine components, but otherwise it's all made right up the road from me. Except for components that bolt on like starters and such. Those are outsourced all over the place. Regarding documentation, it's your burden to prove that I'm a liar. ;)

I'm not accusing anyone of anything ?? I'm just glad that my motor is made in the USA.. and they aways should be in the future.I'm sure you Americans wouldn't have your F16's and that magnificent G.W Bush carrier made in chiney now would y'all ? Not at all good for the US economy.
Just keep 'em coming....

The blocks and everything below is Merc. Engine internals are mostly Yamaha and a lot of what bolts on is too. A lot of that comes from other companies, not Yamaha. Some comes from Mexico. The cams on some 4-stroke Yamahas are made by Ford. The motors these days are truly intercontinental. It kinda boggles the mind.

I look at it from two directions.

1. If it's a US company, the profits, etc, stay in the US.

2. A product may be assemmbled-overseas because of US labor issues. However, if the company is American-I buy.

The plant itself is prolly 30 miles North of me.....one of my neighbors works there.

I drive by the place everytime I go up North, have never actually been inside, but have seen quite a few photos of the production lines, the paper here made a big deal of it last year when they were starting to make some Verados.

Willy is right.......if its stamped there, it ws made there.

Re: Where are Mercs made?

F-16's are made in Foat Wuth, (Fort Worth) Texas at the General Dynamics assembly plant.

Carriers are made at New Port News, Va, or the other shipbuilder (forgot) on the east coast.....Ingalls Shipyard (Litton Industries) builds Frigates at Pascagoula, MS. Container ships are built in Japan (among other places). Rangers are built in Flippin, Arkansas, "One at a Time". Grin

Speaking of container ships, did you see the blerb about the single engine that they use to power current day containers? That sucker is some awesome. Really enjoyed the documentary about the design, construction and fitting out of the thing.

Mark

Re: Where are Mercs made?

Was brousing thru a '94 Mariner catalog yesterday and it said that (for that year) all were made in the USA from 6 hp up. You can look at the engines and tell that the little ones all look just alike and don't look like Merc products.

Mark
