I'm thinking about getting my 5 yr old granddaughter a Wii for xmas but have no idea what I'm doing. I don't want to spend a fortune but need some advice as to what I need and any games she would like. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Thanks

You (we ;)) are not that old but, you are good at remembering history classes!!! :p

LOL, I am no good at wii questions! Now my wife adds that you want the dance game......some bunny game (not playboy type ) and games rated E for Everyone. Tell the geeky clerk at the store that your granddaughter is 5 and they should be able to fix you right up.

The basis Wii package is all you need for the game side. The other controlers and such can come later.
As for games for a 5 year old, there are all kinds of LEGO themed games that she can play and not lose interest as they are easy enough to understand at that age. My buddies 4 years old has a few of them and is really good at them.
Id look at Game stop for some, and they can tell you what is age apropreate.

So you are saying I just need a basic package and maybe a couple of games for her age?

Depends on which color Wii game system you buy: all only come with one remote and 1 nunchuck, which stinks. Maybe get another family member to get the 2nd, so 2 people can play together. Many games can have up to 4-players.

Red color Wii comes with: Wii Sports and Mario Brothers games. Wii sports has 5 differnet games to play: bowling, tennis, golf, boxing, baseball,

Black color Wii comes with: Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort, which has 12 games to play: water ski, fencing, archery, basketball, bowling, mini golf, bicycle, an advanced bowling game, canoeing, frisbee,

White color Wii comes with the same games as the Black. These games are great for kids, as they get older the games can get bored for them.

We have the white with 2 remotes and nunchucks, and my 5 year old nephiew loves it, his favorite games are Wii Sports Resort and Mario Kart Wii, which requires hollow plastic steering wheels that you insert the remotes into, then play the game from your seat turning the wheel right to left to control your guy.

You can also go online with the Wii using Wifi, and use your tv to browse Iboats. :D

You can create characters to use to play with, by designing their face features to look like members of the family and name them the same, makes it more fun.

We almost always buy used games from Game Stop, They are cheaper and guaranteed to play. You can sell them your games that are no longer played and get a discount towards different games.

Hope this all helps. Let me know if you have any other questions...

If white is the same as black then why are there 2 different ones?

I guess just color preference of the console. They only had white at first now all the other colors are available.

The remotes also use AA batteries or you can get a Wii rechargable battery pack and charger. We use regular AA rechargeable batteries in them so we are not constantly buying batteries.

Preference... My TV gear is all black so I would opt for the black Wii. When they first came out, they were all white...

Try to find someone selling one on Craigslist. You might be able to get a complete system with a pile of accessories for the same or less than you'd pay for just the base system. I bought mine from a co-worker and got that kind of deal. Lot of fun!

Re: URGENT Wii question

We have a Wii that the kids use and the one game that everyone likes or can play together as a group is Carnival Games, I think they have 2 versions of that game now. We have even played it when company comes over... The kids like to play Wii Sports together, boxing, baseball, etc. They also have Lego Starwars that they like. BTW, my kids at 10 and 6 (going on 7).

Our console only came with 1 controller and 1 nunckuck, so we bought an extra one controller and nunchuck right away. Passing the controller around was a real PITA so we bought 2 more controllers, we didn't need to buy extra nunchucks though.

One thing, before buying any game, check online and look at the reviews. We bought my son some kind of monster truck game that we thought he would like... The game can only be played by 1 person at a time, which we thought was pretty pointless. When we looked at the reviews online everyone complained about the single player mode. It was money down the drain as the game was only played a couple of times...

Re: URGENT Wii question

Wii is not for everyone/family.

Buy the system for the type of games you'd like to play. A couple of years ago I bought my family a Wii. The 1st 30 days it got about 8 hours of use. Bad deal on my part.

So I went out a bought an Xbox 360 and sold our Wii about a week later. Got lots more game play out of it. But was disappointed on the Online play. (you have to pay for it)
Kids liked it but I wasn't all that crazy about it.

So the next year we got a PS3.
So far that's the best investment I have made, My oldest son is on the PS3 every time he plays. Youngest is on the Xbox. I do use the PS3 every once in awhile. Plus it's an excellent BluRay player.

My general brake down of the 3 systems:
Wii - Great for smaller children, Lots of family oriented games for them to play. Also great for families to play together.
Xbox 360 - Older children to adults, more of the fantasy style games.
PS3 - Older children to adults, Action adventure style games, Realism style. Plus doubles as your BluRay player.
