Those lower units are not robust.----It is near failing and leaving you stranded !!---Take it apart now.------Finding a used one in good condition may not be easy.----New factory parts are expensive !

You can use the 3 or the 6 blade impeller in that motor. Gear pros makes a reasonably priced set of gears for that motor.

Thank you for your definitive "take it apart now!" I hear you and understand and will comply.

I will start off with the take it apart now (this weekend)... this makes me sad but honestly I expected the answer. Looks like I will need to make a few tools to facilitate this project...fortunately I have the equipment to make the tools as needed.

I will follow up on the gear pros suggestion for new gears. Maybe ill be little bit lucky and the glitter not gear and is bearing...cause honestly I expect gear to be more needle like pieces and bearing to be more glittery. But I not a boat lower unit expert and I viewing it as a one legged rear end lol.

I will start a new and appropriate thread for the lower disassembly as I will likely have questions. Should I photograph the process for the next sad soul?

Had to update this cause I didn't realize a screwdriver could be utilized as a water pump drive part. I can't believe all the outboard manufacturers go to the trouble of designing close fitting keys for the water pump....what a waste of time and resources for them when they could have just stuffed a random piece of trash in there.

Ok I done with my rant... no drive shafts were harmed in the removal of this abomination.
Now onward to watch a how to tear down a lower unit video!

So....into it I went.
I'm pretty sure there has been divine intervention in this case. I found the source of the metal flakes aka glitter. I'm glad I took it apart. Please enjoy the pictures. Please advise how.. oh how do I get prop shaft and front gear out... I need to give everything a good thorough bath and relube at minimum. Do I start replacing bearings at this point? Or just clean the hell out of everything.
Please advise best course of further action as gears look good to me.
Pics are of drive shaft below pump...with chewed up glitter maker 2 pics.
Pic of lower drive shaft overall with happy pinion gear.
Pic of I believe reverse gear.
Pic of drive gear and dog.
Pic down hole for drive shaft.

Please let me know if you need or desire more pics.
Also..I have water pump impeller...a full seal kit....and a prayer. Please let me know what replacement parts I need. Also I'm seriously considering replacing lower unit case due to damaged skeg and a good ding in nose of bullet. The alternative would be a skeg guard to clean that part up and putty up the quarter sized ding.
As always you guys are 100% the best.

Well... got things apart without damaging them.
In the prop end area of the propshaft just after the final bearing I found more glitter...
Pic 1 is that area
Pic 2 is close up of that
Pic 3 is of glitter on a paper towel.

Not meaning to bump the thread but I have been told...and have told others. Only accurate information gets accurate answers.

Now noted and marked scoring on prop end. The shifting end looks pretty sharp to me.... but... now I thinking I gonna need whole unit huh.......
So much for the momentary good feelings.

See post #22-----When thrust bearing fails the pinion moves up.-----It was not properly meshed-----The pinion gear looks to be scrap to me.----But post some more pictures if you like.----Good luck finding a good used lower unit.

Honestly I'm not intending to argue...I'm most likely poorly informed please forgive me for that.
Driveshaft at the thrust washer from 2 different sides.
Multiple views of the pinion...being a helical bevel gear I understand it gets smaller as the diameter does. And I'm not about to believe I'm gifted enough to see the wear without a good one to compare it too, I'm used to worn out gears looking a good bit more raggedy.
As you correctly surmised the thrust bearing is toast...and both races for the thrust bearing are also no longer serviceable I think because they are no longer mirror smooth.

Again if you read this and think I'm challenging your knowledge please reread it with the understanding that I clearly just don't know and am asking for clarification and hoping the 1st picture of pinion was poorly taken.... yeah I know boat stands for "break out another thousand" but finances are not what they used to be so I'm hoping nothing more.

Most Respectfully
Sean

Per your recommendation I said heck with it and went to buy at gearpros as suggested. All out of stock would have been outstanding price though for all 4 pieces. So now I looking elsewhere for parts....seems like '89-'05 the would have a ton of spare parts available that's like 15yrs of production....
Just my luck
