Steering Issue volvo penta 5.0

2008 Glastron 20.5 ft with a volvo 5.0. During the late summer it began to steer hard. Just the same day we took it out of the lake for the year the serpentine belt came off. At home I ran it again with the serpentine belt back on again. It ran good until we tried steering it and the belt came off again. I was thinking power steering pump has issues. What else might it be in the steering system?

what troubleshooting have you done?

check your power steering system for oil
turn the pump, if it doesnt turn easy, rebuild the pump (rebuild kit is $14)

Yep with the belt off spin the pump by hand,, it should turn free.

It is full of oil...... pump seems to turn easy enough. It only has about 120 hours but I realize it is almost 20 years old

If the pump turns easy, look for something out of alignment.

120 hours in 20 years means the boat sat for 20 years or more
