Stator

I have a 2008 19' alumaweld with a 200 mercury optima w/jet pump. Took it to the mechanic for its 100 hr service. The mechanic said the wear ring was done. They also are saying I need a new stator. The engine was starting just fine and charging the battery is there something wrong there?

2008 19' alumaweld with a 200 mercury optima w/jet pump. Took it to the mechanic for its 100 hr service. The mechanic said the wear ring was done. They also are saying I need a new stator. The engine was starting just fine and charging the battery is there something wrong there? It did have some sort of alarm when u turned the key to the on position. What causes that?
