Short shaft/long shaft

Hi,
I am replacing my inflatable and engine, and I was wondering what the difference is between a short shaft vs long shaft engine (9-15 hp), and whether both types are compatible on an inflatable (e.g., 10' zodiac), I also plan to use the engine as a backup on my other boats,

You need a short shaft for the inflatable and at least a long shaft as an auxillary engine on a larger boat. Two engines....Or a transom extender on the inflatable.
