I'm trying to determine the year and manufacturer of my 3.5 sears outboard motor.

I don't even know where to start with those #s! A Sears model # should start with a 3 digit prefix followed by a . or space followed by a longer series of numbers.
Maybe someone else can decode what you sent but in the meantime look for a prefix.

I have run into the same problem. All the searching I've done requires a 3 digit # with a . followed by numbers. The number I listed is the first 5 above the other seven.

Look by the carb for a engine tag, and could you post a picture?

I just purchased a 3.5 HP Sears also. It also does not have a prefix # and has after model # 60940 105674B. I am also not finding any information on it. Sounds like the same motor. Mine also says on tag Sears roebuck & co. USA and simpson sears limited-canada. I did find a #574 on the powerhead. Think might be a clinton engine.1965-1968. But not positive. Think its air cooled but not sure . Keep in touch and I will do likewise. Maybe we can get this thing figured out. John johncarol@wavecable.com

While it may be an anomaly or casting number 574 is the prefix for the West Bend built Elgin series from Sears. IIRC (and that's a while back!) the 3 1/2 West Bend/Elgin was the first in the water-cooled twin series shortly following WW2. AFAIR all of the Elgins were painted a light 'pea green'.

If your motor is air-cooled it will have multiple distinct fins on both cylinder and head. If not present then it is water-cooled..

I tried to find the website for the Elgin group on the AOMCI homepage but the link they list is inactive. Might be best to post a question about Elgin contacts on the AOMCI 'Ask-a-member board at:

The website is open to the public and requires no registration. It is incredibly helpful and manned by a group of EXTREMELY knowledgeable people. They have came to my own assistance numerous times. Tom

I have the 3.5 Sears Roebuck & Co.USA Model# 60940 105674B. It also has on tag Simpson Sears Limited-Canada. I had said that the powerhead had a # on it(574)must of had my eyes crossed, it's actually 582. Going to try to attach photos with this message. Thanks John Motor has bottom cowl off.
