I am redoing a starcraft center console. The boat is flipped and I'm Stripping it down to paint it. Heres a couple of questions for you guys that have done this type of project. Should I take the whole boat down to the aluminum? Should I use Gluvit on the bottom of the boat before I paint it? What kind of paint should I use? Spray it or roll and brush? I been hearing a lot about using Rustolem paint.I know I have to use self etching primer but do I use regular primer over that?

Gluvit on the inside..........

PLEASE do a search on paint. There are as many opinions as there are brands of paint. I used rustoleum paint...... no need to strip to bare aluminum to repaint however bare aluminum needs to be properly prepped of the paint will not last

Well,I got the self etching primer on and then when it cured I wet sanded her and put on a coat of are metal primer. Now she needs to be wet sanded again and put the final coats of rusto on. I desided to se my spray gun that I had sitting in the garage for a few years and never been used. Not as hard as you would think to spray and the job is pretty nice the way it comes out. Here's a couple of pics.

Yes I'm using the hardener. I also put some in the primer. The rustoleum says to use acetone to thin it.I was missing up the primer like they do for the top coat. It's all ready for the finial coats just waiting for a nice day to start and then I'll wet sand her and let her dry and paint away.

Ok so I got one coat on and won't be able to work on her till next Wednesday.I guess thats good so the paint will set up good and then I can wet sand it with 600 grit and wash her down, let her dry and put some more paint down. I guess I'm going to try and get down about 4 coats.Do you think that will do lol

I started out spraying the paint on. I wasn't happy with the results I was getting with the spray gun i was using so I broke out the new foam roller I had bought to roll it with. I really liked the way the rustoleum rolled out.I used the hardener with it. The paint lays down real nice even with a roller.

I was using a suction gun.mix was 1 Qt paint and 2oz hardener and about 12oz of acetone. I bought a new gun from Harbor freight hvlp one I didn't really learn how to work it and I needed to get the last coat on this morning so I rolled it. I have to practice with the hvlp gun for next time I need to paint.I think I got it figured out, went online to read up on it.

Ok so now that the weather is nice, I got to Nautelex in the garage waitingto be installed. I got the galvit down today. Sprayed the spalsh well and transum with one coat of paint. Just needs to be wet sanded and painted again. Next nice day I get the flotation and wiring are going in and then the plywood. It's going to be a nice felling when the vinyl goes down. I'll put up some pics next time I do some work on her.

Hey SKB,

This might help you with your HF Gun...

http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/techinfo/HVLPspraygun.html

I found with mine that settng the compressor @ 100 psi and then setting the gun @ 45 psi worked well. I mixed two cups of paint with 1/4 cup of Acetone and 1oz of hardener for my mix. It sprayed really nice with no orange peel or fisheyes. Layed down very smooth. Cured hard as nails. I used Valspar's tractor paint but it's essentially the exact same paint as Rustoleum.
