Low idle jet cleaning w/ 30 gauge wire?

Hey everybody,

I have a '72 Johnson 85hp and need to clean the low idle jets.
I bought 30 gauge steel wire and I plan on filing the ends round to not scratch the he walls of the jets.

I also bought 20 gauge aluminum wire too in case 30 gauge is insufficient.

After I remove the frost caps what technique should I use?
Gentle flossing?
Or just run the wire through in on direction.

Also, should I lube with carb cleaner (I realize that is not much of a lube) or maybe a little fogging oil?

What way is the right way...I'll do anything to avoid damage.

Thanks again!

Not sure about your engine but I've used the wire out of a bread wrapper as suggested by others if your talking about the idle holes under the welch plug. I just sprayed carb cleaner down the holes before I started. Hope this helps, good luck.

Ive cleaned quite a few jets with a wire from a twistie from a loaf of bread. I take a lighter and melt off the paper or plastic and prod gently. Ive never had any ill effects [as far as I could tell] with my jets because of it.

That was a lot easier than I expected.

Thanks for the twist tie tip.

You can also use a set of tip cleaners for torches to clean the jets.

The '72 carb has fixed jets...the orifice is removable...but anyway it looks like I was overreacting as to the difficulty.
Once I popped the caps out it was a straight shot and much easier than expected.

I think that "clogged jets" was the reason the motor didn't start after I rewired it in 2011 (good compression, good spark etc).

Some of you may remember my posts from last year and it is still the same engine.
I haven't had it running yet, but with all the help of experienced OMC guys, IT WILL!!!

Thanks for chiming in!
