I know nothing about these things but my wife wants one for her birthday. I have no idea why as she has hundreds of books laying around she has never read. But easy me will probably get her one so she can have hundreds of books in it she never reads.

Anyways can anyone tell me what I need to get her? I don't want the most expensive but I don't want junk either. (or do I)

Re: Kindle or Nook??

I got my wife a Kindle for Christmas. She hasn't put it down yet. The Kindle is better for reading outside. One bonus for the Nook is that you can have people sharing your library. So if you have several people with Nooks, you can share books on the same account. This website shows some of the differences between the two. It looks to me like the Kindle wins for the most part. Be prepared to lose your wife for a while.

Re: Kindle or Nook??

Kindle just about hands down. I purchased one for my wife that is wifi capable and she has loved it. Loved it so much that now family members and many of her friends followed her lead.

It has cut down on the number of books in the house (Hurray!!!) and my wife even reads hers while she is on her daily treadmill workout. I like it because the screen is so clear and the text size is a simple adjustment. Now, my wife reads multiple books at a time..... books in the bathroom, the bedroom and books she reads in the evenings........ we used to have books everywhere!!! No more! With the Kindle you can read an unlimited number of books and it will keep track of what page you are on in each book.

Amazon has hundred's and hundred's of free books and all the new books (which has saved me a ton of cash). If she should ever have it break or become lost or stolen....amazon has a record and she can replace all of her acquired books for free. The kindle itself will hold 3500 books and amazon retains them all...... actually my wife could in theory have 10,000+++ books and rotate which 3500 she wants on hand.

My wife says the screen is fine in the sun and in the blaring glaring sun all you need to do is change the angle of the screen.

The difference is the cheaper model only has a 3G connection (a free connection) and is slower for downloading books. The wifi model downloads books in about 30 seconds and since we have wifi in our home it was the best choice and well worth it.

Need more info ....let me know and I will make the wife answer ;)

Really do not know anything on the nook.

Good info Bob. I assume the WiFi would connect to my wireless router and the 3G connection works about everywhere? She has to stay out of the sun so that is no problem.

The 3g works anywhere you have cell coverage and the wifi connects to any "open" wifi connection and it is all automatic

Re: Kindle or Nook??

My wife also has a Kindle and never puts it down. We bought one for my mother-in-law for Christmas as well. Kindle now has a sharing feature but it's apparently up to the authors/publishers as to whether a particular title can be shared. Not sure if that's the same on the Nook. I did read a pretty in depth comparison of the two at one point in one of my PC magazines and the Kindle came out on top although I do believe they were comparing the previous Nook version. We have noticed that the display on my mother-in-laws new Kindle is even better than the one on my wifes 1 year old one.

I don't think you can go wrong, they are both fine devices tied extensive stores but I would go with the Kindle. Evaluate whether you really need the 3G before choosing that pricier model.

Re: Kindle or Nook??

Amazon controls the sharing and "rumor" has it that sharing will be easier soon. Alleged to be a two week share program. I do know that the amount of free books is absolutely unbelievable......... in the short time my wife has had her Kindle (since September 2010) I do know it has paid for itself in what books would have been purchased.

The primary reason we went with the pricier model is because our cell coverage is less then terrible here but wifi is strong at home and where my wife frequents.

I bought my wife the Nook Color for Christmas. It's a bit cold out here so we have never tried it outside. Hers is a wifi only model. It's almost a tablet PC with what it can do besides read books, like a few games and browse the internet. It runs Android 2.1 I believe. B&N has some other apps for it too.

Bought one a year and a half ago for Mr. Ladyfish and he hasn't put it down either. It goes everywhere with him. You can't go wrong with a Kindle.

Just to be clear, you don't need either connection while you are reading the book. Its just for when you are downloading the book.

Re: Kindle or Nook??

Like everyone else, got my wife a kindle. I haven't seen her in like 18 months...so it's a gift that keeps on giving to both of us. She can connect to a 3g network and download books for like $5. She doesn't need to be in a wifi area, she just needs to be in an area that has cell coverage. She looked at the other electronic book readers and decided on the Kindle. I give her credit for being an expert in this area as she reads at least a couple of books a week.

Hmmm....am I that bad of a husband that she needs to escape into books so much?? Oh well, I'm going to see how the boat is and I'll think about it then.

My father has a Kindle.. He loves it.
My sister has a nook. I haven't talked with her about it. But from what i have heard. If you want to share books you'll want to get the nook. Otherwise the Kindle is a great buy. My boss has one as well and she loves the Kindle.

I got the Kindle for Christmas. I highly recommend it. You can read in the sun. If you get the Kindle, I can point you to websites that show the free books every day. I have around 50 books now and only paid for maybe 5. The Nook can borrow from the library and the Kindle can't, but many libraries do not have a large lending library. The other positive is that Amazon has the best customer service. You can also download samples of books before buying.

If you own an android smart phone, there is a free app that turns your phone into a kindle. Convenient and addicting to read your favorite media anywhere and anytime.

Yeah..... brain cramp, My wife's kindle does both 3G and wifi but it is the higher model..... not the highest model which I believe is the DX which I do not have knowledge of.

Is anyone using the DX model?

Yes, my wife has mentioned the smartphone apps too ;)

The DX is just much larger. It was developed mainly for college students and textbooks. I don't think it's real practical for a home user. Might be helpfuly for someone vision impaired.

Angus, they've got the same thing for the iphone also. From what I understand, it can even remember what page you're on from device to device.
