Is a 60’s vintage Evinrude 28 or 33 hp rare ?

So, I’ve been looking at a lot of outboards for sale for quite a while trying to fine one of these in good shape. I’ve only found 2 - one was a wreck and one was unknown for $1000. I can’t tell if I’m just having an unlucky streak or if this vintage / hp combo is hard to come by. Thanks.

I have (had) the same problem completely void of good used outboards, 35-100hp, w/in 150-200miles of me. Few available were nearly scrap at premium prices.....

Why a 28 but not a 25hp? Or a 33 not 35hp?

If for your Areocroft boat, an 18 or 20 of same Era would do fine too

HP decals are often a result of marketing !------And remember that shopping / choices were different in 1962.-----The 33 used the 40 HP crankshaft and connecting rods.----A simple rugged motor.----I might rebuild one of a few as a spare for the grandson.

I’m in SE Michigan. I have a friend who’s spent a lifetime rebuilding and selling vintage Evinrudes and Johnson’s. He recommended the 60’s 28 and 33 as very solid, reliable, simple motors. I guess the 40 inherited a lot of the 33 parts and worn out lower ends were more common. Plus my max rating is 30. I don’t remember his reasoning behind the 28 but I think it had a lot of parts in common with the 33 if I recall. I have a 30 Suzuki long shaft now (yes, on the Aerocraft which wants a standard shaft) and hate to drop down to an 18 but have been considering it. Losing 40% of my hp is hard to swallow. I know where a nice 18 is for about 250 but haven’t pulled the trigger. There are several 40’s around here and quite a few 10 and under. Just nothing in my preferred range.

????------The 28 was in 62 / 63 / 64.-----Became the 33 in 65.-----Different cylinder head.,----The 33 used a lot of the 40 HP parts.-----The lower units on the 33 and 40 used bigger bearings than modern 40 HP motors !

Thanks for clarifying - that sounds more like what he said. Regardless, is it odd I’m seeing about every 60’s evinrude HP other than 28 or 33 ? Perhaps they’re all in private collections now or people are hanging on to them cause they love ‘em. I have all winter to find one - the hunt is half the fun.
