How to add alternator? 1990 Mercury 8HP

Hi All,

​My understanding is I can add an alternator (or similar) to charge my battery when running my 1990 Mercury 8HP outboard. Can anyone tell me what I need (or check to see what I have? ) ? The motor serial number starts with "C".

You need the coil to mount under the flywheel and a rectifier, pretty simple process, rectifier is $5 at Radio shack, coil is on eBay for whatever price you can find.

​I just did a quick search on eBay and didn't see one, but I didn't use the part number. Look on a parts diagram for the optional lighting coil and do a search with that part number.
