HELP!!!!! I am in the process of rebuilding my '97 VP DP-SM outdrive and I cannot get the new bearing carrier to go in. Does it need to be pressed in, in a press? Does it get pressed in using the inner prop shaft? It needs to go a good 1/2" before I can even start the retainer ring.

As long as the housing is not (or becoming) cocked/offset to one side, usually it'd go down with just a bit more than medium effort of your hand power. The O-rings and contact points of both housings need to be well oiled using GL-5 gear oil. If it still won't go down then some light tapping should get it to go as long as you're sure nothing else seems to be holding it up.

I'd also fear that quite possibly the inside diameter of the bearing carrier new seals that touch the outer prop shaft could be creating some friction should you not be using the seal protection sleeve tool which is available here at iboats. http://www.iboats.com/Boat-Parts-Ac...07--searched.1--session_id.229584460?q=884807

Hopefully you're using a Volvo service manual to help guide you along.

Just to be sure, is the Volvo carrier part number you bought 3851234,

The image of the seal tool may not show below, but I'll give it a try anyways,

The carrier is going in straight and I have the correct carrier. I am also using the service manual but it almost seems the new carrier is about .001" larger than the old one. They both measure the same on my calipers, so I'm not sure. I am sure there is no obstructions holding it up. The carrier is not going in far enough to contact the seals, so at this point the seal tool won't help. I have put moderate pressure on it and still no luck. I'll try again this morning after Church.

After more oil and a little persuasion from the dead blow, it went in. Thanks for the help.

Good to hear it went in for you. I do recall they sometimes need a little extra persuasion.:thumb:

Ultrium: if you are interested in used parts for your repair, please PM me. I recently replaced my 2001 DP-SM. ( I hope this is the correct way to ask this on the forum. Moderator - please correct me if this is wrong).

Next time: the groove where the o-ring sets.
Clean it out and install the o-ring.
Then lube the outside of the o-ring.
The lube in the groove "lifts" the o-ring and causes it to lock.
Jamming it in can cause damage to the o-ring.
