Yep, you couldn't pay me to be out on the water this weekend. If I wasn't working, I'd have a cooler and a lawn chair at the ramp, though.

Re: Can't wait to check in here after Labor Day!

We went out Friday evening around 5 and had the lake to ourselves!

On the way home around 9 the anchor light wouldn't work (I've only checked it about 200 times) and just before the dock the bow lights quit....loose bulb in the anchor light shorted acrossed the terminals and blew the fuse .

The SHT part of this story? I just installed the fuses last week. My boat is a 72 and never had a single fuse

I'm working all weekend (Friday-Monday). Hadn't thought about all the rediculousness to read about starting Monday evening. Stupid Human Tricks While Boating will be flooded with posts. Let's hope there are no trajedies.

I went to the Surf City Soundside Park ramp this afternoon and wasn't disappointed. There was a sailboat tied up on the inside of the ramp courtesy dock with a good half dozen folks apparently waiting for somebody to show up. It was like waiting for Godot. I know they were there a good 45 minutes before the guy they were waiting for arrived. In the meanwhile, one of the local characters decided to point out the error of their ways. The people on the boat weren't taking the lecture in ramp courtesy very well when Godot finally arrived. Then he and our local hero got into it: first words, then heated words, followed by a shove, a shove back and then a knife got pulled. The local pulled his own blade out and the sailor decided to put his away. Then more words between them as they alternately puffed up and retreated.

As I said to another local watching this with me: "You can't pay money for entertainment like this."

The sailboat finally eased away from the dock and the local guy involved in the altercation gave them a good view of his stern as he ignored the "No Wake" sign.

Every day a new adventure....

3-4ft rollers today with rain. They are saying 5-7ft (S.C.A.) tomorrow. Not going to be able to enjoy the lake this labor day unless we go over to the very crowded bay. Not really worth it.

I had always imagined sailboat guys to be really relaxed in nature. It's pretty crazy to picture sailboat thugs pulling knives on eachother.

Gonna be in the 60's up here tomorrow so I'm hoping to have the lake mostly to myself. Fish probably wont bite but the peace and quiet will make up for that.

yeah always something going on over there for sure. we just stayed home too since i woke up and seen the winds out of the north i didn't even want to drive by the lake today because i knew it would have been rocking and rolling.

is the bay area your usual spot? we are about 30 minutes east of there along the lake. we have a bunch of friends that slip over there and catawba.

Really quite down here. I came over to the beach to play watch dog security guy don't let the kids tear up things. But with school starting and the bad weather from this thing in LA its really slow. The fishing in salt water down here has been for the most part shut down buy the government.

Well you guys out east have had bigger fish to fry, mainly hurricaines jeese!? We on the western end of the country have had better temps and conditions for boating. The lunacy never seems to end at our local lakes come a big holiday weekend though. Unfortunately, the demographic here seems to leave no middle ground as there are only $60K+ wake boats and $500 dollar 70's vintage skiers/fish boats. We have alot of arguments at the ramp on busy days to say the least. I choose to either show up before dawn, or not put in at all and just watch. I decided to forego the mess this year due to the shear stress of it all last year.

Re: Can't wait to check in here after Labor Day!

I didn't go out much but on a short run moving the boat back from hurricane safety to the house, got cut off twice by a kid pulling a tube. it was quite dangerous for the little guys he was pulling.

Saw a near-miss, though that was priceless. A 110 foot brand new luxury yacht was steaming into the harbor at a good clip. Instead of staying in the main (shipping) channel, I watched him head off toward the container piers, on a route that is marked by red bouys. But it's a dead-end channel: it's 50' deep but at the end, rises up to between 4 and 10 feet. And there's a bar that comes back and cuts you off from just heading away from the docks and back to the main channel. I was thinking about radioing him, but he stopped and made a hard right just in time and got back to the correct channel. He could have easily grounded that yacht. Hope for his sake the owner wasn't on board!

also saw a guy launching a 17' whaler; backed it down into salt water until his tail pipe was bubbling; his boys were trying to back it off the trailer by the motor, but the safety chain wouldn't budge....

watched a family backing a 40' sailboat into the docks and into their slip. I wasn't looking when I heard a loud CRUNCH of fiberglass and concrete exchanging molecules. Reckon the tide was going out, which was the same direction they were backing.

I was steering my friend's 42' sailboat when the steering suddenly got real stiff. At first I thought it could be from the wind/current as used to happen with little sailboats I used to sail. Then I thought maybe I fouled the rudder on a crab pot or dredge cable--there was lots of equipment in the harbor. Turns out one of the ladies in the cockpit accidently hit the autopilot "on" button and locked the steering on me.

I had a Great time on the Lake Fri-Sat &Sun & Monday. We actually dropped from 100 degrees F for the past 68 days when a cool front blew in and the highs were in the 80's:cool:--good friends, food, drink & scenery;);)

but I did watch a guy park his trailer side ways at the ramp-somehow he got his boat loaded on it!

Same conditions here--35mph winds--drove by the lake and it looked like white water rapids--needless to say only a few sail boats and Jetski's on the lake (Arkabutla)

Re: Can't wait to check in here after Labor Day!

Got pretty heavy on Champlain over the weekend too.

Other than the waves, only 2 things worth mentioning.

One, a cop trying to chase down about 8 Fountains blasting up the lake between Valcour Island and mainland NY. I don't know what they were doing wrong, I'm unaware of any speed limit there, and boat traffic was fairly light.
The other, was a guy jack knifing his trailer under the dock at the ramp trying to back down too quickly.
Hope I didn't pressure him, he really couldn't believe that I was there with a 40ft houseboat to trailer it home, could he? :)

I had just nosed up to the end of one of the docks to let my brother and his girlfriend unload and get his truck to the ferry so he could meet me back on the the VT side with his transportation.

We avoid the lake like the plague on holidays...They have DUI checkpoints on both roads that lead back from Saguaro lake...Stupid people + DUI checkpoints = Boat stays in storage this weekend...
