Has anyone used these with aluminum? I have some rod holders to mount and can't get to the underside. Well nuts would take up too much space.

Yes! Rivets work great with aluminum.

Do you use the blind rivets? I'm thinking the ones that will take a 1/4 20 bolt should work just fine if they tighten up good.

Re: Blind rivets?

I've been using quite a few lately. I get them at Jay-Cee's online:
http://www.rivetsonline.com/rivets-en/blind-rivets-en.html

I riveted my 3/4" decking down with them:
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=509163

The closed end blind rivets are the strongest, but you may not be able to find any with a long enough grip range for your application.

If you use the 1/4" diameter rivets you'll need the heavy duty setting tool, the 3/16 can be set with the regular "one hand" tool.

Yes. Rivet Nuts. My appologies, I didn't know what I was talking about.

Ayuh,.... In that case,.... Ya, No problem, Go for it...

They swell up pretty good, 'n should leave BIG holes if yanked hard enough to dislodge 'em...

Are ya Sure ya can't get to the backside, 'n plywood shim it,..??

Thanks, thats what I needed to know. I have one more place to check for possible access but even if its open I don't know that I can reach that far back. I'll find out.

Re: Blind rivets?

Just use some stanless screws, as long as it isn't external below the water line that would work fine, it leaves a small hole and is easily removable

Re: Blind rivets?

Done this many times in old boats. Racers. Bitches to reach into anywhere.

Cut out a 1/8 " thick backing plate that has welded SS nuts on it in the RIGHT pattern that will line up VERY EASILY. I USE VERY LONG THREADED ROD with grease on the threads. I run the rods into the nuts. Coat the top of the plates with whatever I like to use. Epoxy, RTV or 5200. Pull them thru the deck holes, slide the piece to be bolted in place, into place. Pull up the hidden bracket / brackets & replace 1 at a time each threaded rod with the FINAL SS bolts.............PRE COAT THE SS BOLT THREADS WITH GREASE ALSO. Let set for 2 days. You can then replace anything at any time. I have also used just POP rivits to hold the plate in place. Varies with my feelings.

I've pulled backing plates into position using fishing line. Run the fishing line through the compartment holes, then through the backing plate holes, squirt some adhesive (epoxy, 4200) on the backing plate, pull it into position, then tighten screws. Once the adhesive cures, remove screws and add fixture. As long as you have access to slip the backing plate into the compartment, and it can slide into position easily, it should work fine. Kind of like what cyclops is sayin'

Just use some stainless screws, as long as it isn't external below the water line that would work fine, it leaves a small hole and is easily removable

That's what I'd do. If and when the holes strip out, then you can add rivnuts or a backing plate. I have a bunch of things just screwed to my jon boat (no underside access for nutting) and they haven't loosened up or stripped out. I do prefer nutting things though...
