moto_0127.jpgmoto_0111.jpgmoto_0167.jpgI pulled my 2500# bowrider with my 07 Titan. Don't even feel the boat back there. Fuel mileage isn't great but all kinds of power, and room. My neighbor has a 2010 gmc and half the room I have. Both trucks are four doors.

Re: Best tow vehicle - Opinions and recommendations please

I drive and tow with a 01 Dodge Dakota Sport Quad Cab with the 4.8L V-8 engine .I typically tow a 20 ft boat or a 22 ft travel trailer @ 2200+lbs with no issue. It gets ok gas mileage @15MPG when not towing , the quad cab is great for hauling the family around.I picked the that model because I liked the lines and styling of the vehicle. If I were to do anything different I would of went with a full sized truck with a diesel engine.Only because the diesel engine will get better MPG and can tow more.People argue that their truck is better blah blah blah.Toyota,Dodge,Ford,Chevy whatever, just rememeber your better off having an over powered/heavy vehicle then a to light under weight vehicle when your towing.Nothing will make your backside pucker like having a boat push you around when your going downhill.Thats my 2 cents worth. You will have to decide and compromise Power-vs-MPG-vs-commuter vehicle.

I'm towing with my 2001 Dodge Durango 5.9L 4x4. She has never complained that anything is too heavy... she is rated at 7650 lbs. I added a finned diff cover and tranny pan to help her cool off. :)

Re: Best tow vehicle - Opinions and recommendations please

I use a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab, 4X4 with the 5.9l V8. It gets decent mileage for a 5.9l 4X4 truck. Even tho it has the suicide doors in the back ive fit 3 big guys in the back and thry only complained about each other. The 4 wheel drive is easy to engage you don't even have to get out of the truck, just stop, put it in neutral, shift into your desired 4wheel gearing, put it back into drive and you're off again. I've towed some big boats with this truck and have never had a problem. I towed my brothers 30ft bayliner flybridger almost 100miles and it performed like a champ. The only problem I had when towing that big boat was the brakes got hot, hr that's just because the trailer brakes weren't working, it was all truck stopping that big boat. I tow my 18ft Tom Sawyer all the time with it and its like I'm not towing anything. hope this helped.

I have an 05 RAM 1500 with 33900 miles that I've own since mile #1. Absolutely love my truck. I haul a 6000 lb camper and about 5000 lb boat set up all over the place. Both have trailer brakes. With all my extras added (exhaust system, k&n cold air flow kit and more, wink wink) I'm getting 13 mph though, this is the reason for only 33900 miles on it. I wouldn't dream of trading it off.

Then you really shouldn't laugh at the other iboater who said the Tundra is in a class of it own. Drive one and see, its has more North American content than your GM (Tundra 80%, Silverado 61%), plus they are all built here in Texas. And the costs of parts is a moot point, I've had 2 Tundra's... never bought anything other than normal maintenance items for both. Maybe you should take one for a spin next time you need a truck?...;)

Yes, what I find funny is the comment that it should be in a class of it's own... Seems most feel this way about their brands.. brands they are loyal too. Toyota is still very new to the full size market in comparison to the big three. AND if you think just because the Tundra is built in America makes it an American truck you are so very sadly mistaken :( but that is not what this thread is about.

My 1998.5 Ram 2500 quadcab 4x4 Diesel is the best truck I've ever owned. I've had many. It has 175K miles and runs like new. It tows my boat and anything else I need to tow effortlessly, and gets good fuel economy.

Brand loyality has nothing to do with the Tundra being a bad *** truck! FWIW, I have 5 vehicles and the Tundra is the only Toyota. And while the so called domestics have ran to Mexico to build plants in the last 10-15 years, Toyota has been building plants here and making vehicles here... but your right, this thread isn't about that. Actually my Tundra has more NA parts in it than my 2011 Mustang GT. Strange, isn't it? :)

What is it about your Tundra that makes it what it is to you? Toyota did have a lot off issues with this truck when it first came out. But I have to hand it to them, from what I've read they did stand behind the issues and work to getting them resloved.

My truck to me is a beast. This engine/tranny combination is not like anything I've owned in a truck before. I dumped a lot of mony modding my 5.4L Ford and it still didn't have the power I have in my current stock truck, 6.2L with 403Hp and 413Tq. I love the option of 2wd/Auto(like all wheel drive/4H and 4L... Never needing to use anymore than you have to. It is solid and smooth at the same time. There is more than enough room under to hood to do anything that could possibly need be done This would be a bit overkill for the OP. :)

Yep... they had a whopping 20 engines that broke camshafts on the early 5.7L's. It was a problem with the camshaft not being made to Toyota's spec. Toyota even protected the vendor and didn't "out" them with the issue. They also offered to repurchase the truck if you had this problem, or they replaced the engine and extended the warranty.

Other than that, I haven't heard to too much else.

The Tundra is what it is because of multiple reasons. 4.30 gears (10.5" ring gear), 6 speed auto with a tranny heater & cooler, auto LSD, etc, etc... the list goes on and on. Throw on a TRD supercharger and get 504 horse and 550 ft lbs of torque.... and the SC will not void the warranty. What other manufacturer will do that?

I've rode in a 6.2L GM with the 6 speed auto.... and honestly, it actually felt slower than my Tundra (maybe it was the gear ratio, but whatever). This was right after the dealer got done replacing the tranny at 70K miles. Might be a good truck, but I don't think GM' quality is anywhere close to the quality of Toyota or Ford (top 2 in my book).

I'm sure some of it does, but I bet a bunch of it gets reinvested in more plants here...

So if you buy a GM or Dodge, does the profit go back to the tax payers?... It should, they still OWE us!

20 trucks with bad camshafts would not even made it to the news. They had a list of issues, but as I said, they did stand behind the issues to get them resolved and that impressed me. I know some of the issues I had with my Ford when I addressed them with my dealer I got the "we've never heard of that before" comment. I would much rather someone be straight with me than to play dumb.

AS far as the being able to bolt on a Supercharger on the Tundra, Ford also does this too. Roush SC do not void the warranty on them either. I do not know of any for the Chevy or Dodge trucks that does this though.

I think it was TruckTrends that did a head to head on the big 3 along with the Tundra and Titian. Actually the GMC Sierra out preformed all other's in the most categories and both the Chevy and GMC showed to have the fastest 0-60 speed, even faster than the Tundra. Not sure that the seat of the paints is the best gauge for how fast something really is.

Yes it has. Once the "Buy American" guys and the Toyota guys start going at it, it's pretty much over. And the OP hasn't been back.
