Looking at this 94 Cobia 198e Monte Carlo which is super clean. I’m trying to find out what hp motor this might be and if 4 barrel setup. I did read the Yamaha out drive is extremely hard to find Parts but stole Volvo setup so it’s very strong and a good unit. But rather get some answers here if possible rather then reading old threads. Pic of engine cover maybe can help someone tell me which hp motor.

I read a lot the Yamaha is hard to find anything but copied Volvo so a heavy duty unit. Boat is super clean garage kept from pictures I can’t find many flaws before go drive 3 hours to see it. I’m not sure what hp is in this model as nada shows can be a few 5.7 hp models available. Seems like light boat 2100 lbs for 19 feet so should be efficient vrs this 3200 lbs 20 foot crownline I’m also looking at which seems like a tank. The Cobia is 3k cheaper and both with 5.7 I’m leaning to lighter boat less fuel used. So looking for opinions on this boat and engine combo.

I would pass on anything with a Yamaha drive, or lowball so low that you can afford to buy a complete prop to pulley longtail to swap in

1994 350 with a 4 barrel is 260hp

I saw someone said the bravo drive is a direct swap but I’m not sure. A few say it’s a strong drive but if breaks screwed on parts. I guess depends how good this boat really is as posted and asked how the boat is vrs others from that age. Hard to find a decent boat interior and shell today that they aren’t asking way too much for.

Yamaha only sold drives in the US a handful of years and parts are non existent. Would steer clear unless it’s such a good deal repowering makes sense

It's a 29 year old boat.

Keyhole in transom is now standard. However you need a whole lot more than just a drive, you need all the bits that attache the drive to the boat.

You have to remove the Yamaha motor and drive from the boat, and replace with a Mercruiser or Volvo Penta

Well he is asking 8900 so if not sure that’s a good enough deal to do a 5k repower. He claims only 77 hours on it. Hour meter probably broke.

Yea then trusting that the actual 433 hours on the boat(sent picture) it was well taken care of. Seen a lot of drives need nothing but if can’t get something when need it what is the point. Too bad didn’t copy the Volvo so well the parts interchanged. Lol

Yea it’s beyond redicilous all around here on people gouging on prices. Look up nada and add 3k seems to be the going rate on anything.
The bigger problem is people are paying this crap so it continues on. I tried to see if would put in water tomorrow and tried to dance around that at all costs. Said bring ears and expects someone to buy it with out going on lake. Lol I was just curious and that’s beyond a red flag. So lower is probably already messed up and will run but grind in gear or something that’s making him not want to take it out. So as said I’m done moving on.
Just sucks all this price gouging makes you not want to even bother looking for a decent boat.
Thanks for help everyone.

Sucks while itS summer but you may be way better off waiting til fall or next spring

We were thinking about a newer jet ski and while we could sell our current one for what I paid for it years ago it’s just a bad time to buy if you are value conscious.

How about a chap 1930ss? Yes the smaller 4.3 but I’m a car guy and know some tricks like 1.6 rocker arms new intake and carb to boost it 40/50 hp. Worst case a cam and heads swap if wasn’t enough engine. 250 hp isn’t too hard on a 4.3 and it still be efficient. Seems super nice all new interior tons of stereo equipment and big expensive ski tower. Trailer looks new also. So kinda justifies a high price I guess.

I suspect you’ll find the 4.3 will be fine for that size boat if propped correctly. Yes with vortec heads intake and 4 bbl you can get a nice bump. As far as towers go that one is not that expensive but yes has a lot of speakers on it .

as with any boat that age even of us looks like it’s been cared for and maintained I would be concerned about stringer and transom rot.

much better choice than Yamaha sterndrive boats

4.3 in a boat is at edge of reversion stock ....forget the "tricks" that work on a car. The whole wet exhaust and constant load require you to think differently for a boat

The 4.3 stock will work just fine
