Maybe I've gone brain dead. I put on the recoil starter and got looking at it. The only way the pinion will engage the power head is clockwise and it turns the head counter clockwise. Am I missing something?

Re: 5 hp Johnson starter problems

It's a 1968 5hp. I just purchased it.
It had a broken intake manifold (the recoil starter area was broken). The recoil I put on it was from a 1970 6 hp I believe. I myself haven't ever had that recoil apart, but I've never run it on anything else either.

use the search feature and type in 6 hp. vertical starter rewind....before doing anything else, I'd draw an arrow on the flywheel indicating a clockwise direction when view from the top, as I've thought the same thing once when really tired < my excuse I'm sticking to it >
