18 ft 1979 Galaxy I/O ID question

I am looking into purchasing the Galaxy. It has a 140 HP motor. Lady that is selling it said it is the equivalent of a Chrysler Cordova. She does not know the actual make of motor. What motor could it be? She said the motor needs an impeller for the foot and a alternator. The impeller would be for the water pump?

I am mainly getting the boat for the galvanized trailer.

Thank you for any help.

Numbers from the engine and drive, or pictures are about your only hope for ID.

Don;

That is what I figured. Thank you for the reply. I cannot see the boat for about 10 days. The owner does not know much and just started a night shift job. I am getting the boat motor and trailer for $250. I figure the trailer alone is worth the price.

I have a 135 HP Mercury outboard on my other boat. The motor is to large for the current boat. Could I possibly remove the I/O and put the outboard on there?

Thanks again for the response.

Hello Bill,

You would have to substantially modify the transom and stern area of the boat in order to make the switch from an I/O to an outboard. There may be a thread or 2 here about doing that, if you search. I have seen it mentioned and discussed, just not sure if anyone went the distance on it.

For the $$$$ not worth it though, better getting an outboard boat for your motor. I would suspect that the boat in question is not operational, unless you prove otherwise. So, $250 can turn into $2500 real quick once you take the plunge.

Bill we owned a 1978 Galaxy that had a 120hp motor. It was the venerable GM 2.5l 4cyl. But it was mated to an OMC stringer drive. I wouldn't be surprised if that boat you're considering is also. Ask the sell what color the outdrive is.
White = Obsolete OMC (bad)
Black = Mercruiser (not bad)

Modifying the boat to be an outboard is A LOT of work and probably not worth it.

I agree, wouldn't go into it looking to modify it. And if it proved to be a ton of restoration/rebuild work to be done, I might not go for it.

... but at $250, there's not a ton of risk involved. Worst case is having to trash the hull, part out the stern drive (doesn't matter what kind) and sell the trailer. Chances are after that you'd be ahead a few hundred bucks to buy the hull for your outboard.

I bought my boat kinda' like the deal you're looking at, but hull was in excellent condition. The sterndrive needed a couple hundred dollars of repairs (it's an OMC) and we were on the water in a couple weeks.

You'll just need to set a "it ain't worth it anymore" point on the boat if you start repairs/rebuild.

Tpenfield;

I am restoring a 15 ft tri hull. The 135 HP outboard is on there. It is only rated for 70 HP. I sold my trailer to a buddy that needed it for his water ready boat. I am mainly looking at this for the trailer. Hoping I can get it running cheap and sell the boat to have more money for the resto of the tri hull. I may keep it if it is in decent condition.

TilliamWe;

Thanks for the info. I will check it out when I look at it in about 10 days.I do not think the owner would know at this point. I am buying it.

Southkogs;

I will not modify the boat. It was just an idea as I have had the 135 up for a while. I have it up for trade for a smaller motor or for sale at $500.

Thank you all for your replies.

Do I/O have impellers or just water pumps? Does that depend on make and model of outdrive?

Thanks.

Here are some motor pics the owner sent me. There is a Mercruiser sticker on the valve cover in 2 photos. Some of the pics are not very good.

Definately a Mercruiser drive, so that's not bad. I can't tell, because your pictures were too closeup to see the whole engine, but it didn't say "470" on it anywhere, did it?

I am not sure. These are pics the owner sent me. They are currently out of town and should return around the 15th. I am definitely buying for that price. I will know more once I can see it in person.

Bond-o;

Thank you for identifying the motor. Now I can start looking for an alternator. Does this outdrive have an impeller?

Thanks.

Thank you sir!

Ayuh,... The only "Gotcha" I know of with that lower unit water pump is,...
The Old 1s have a water feed fittin', which was deleted sometime durin' the run of the MC-1s...
In the parts listin's, it explains how to tell if you've got an Early, or later MC-1...
